This roundup of Valentine's Day treats has every fruit snack your heart desires- Beautiful cakes, cupcakes, cookies, candies that are homemade with simple ingredients!
I made these Valentine's Day fruits with messages after seeing some fruits on the web that had adorable printables attached to them. Since making printables is too much work and I am kinda lazy, I took the easier route, grabbed my edible markers, and simply wrote on the fruits! You can add these fruits into your kids lunch boxes or even hubby's lunch bag. Can you imagine the looks on their faces when they open their lunch boxes and see these cute fruits? I live for those moments. For more inspired treats, have fun perusing this roundup of Pink Desserts {Valentine’s Day Desserts} as well as these Easy Breakfast In Bed Ideas (Recipes).

Edible Markers
Do not fear! I did not use sharpies on these fruits because that would be toxic and then the fruit would be contaminated, making them no longer edible. I do not like wasting food either so that would go against every fiber of my being! Edible markers are the magic here. You can find these online at Amazon or Wilton. You can also find them at Walmart, Hobby Lobby, Party City, Joann, or Michaels. Just check your local stores to see if they are in stock, and have fun creating.
Tips and Techniques
- My favorite fruits were these pears- They were not as waxy as the other fruits. So, writing on them was very easy.
- Bananas are easy to write on the skin- Because they are also not as waxy. I think the message on them is the cutest!
- Invite your kids to make some for friends or family- My little one had a blast writing on them too. Well, more like scribbling. It kept him busy for a full 15 minutes and that's a miracle!
- Oranges are more difficult to write on the peel- Because they are covered in a nasty waxy substance. Even after washing them a few times, I couldn't get rid of all that icky wax.
- Use yellow or green apples, if possible- When I bought these red apples, I didn't realize I was going to use a black edible marker to write my messages. Turns out that red and black don't complement each other too well, making it difficult to read the message. So, if you will be writing messages on apples, I suggest you get yellow or green apples and use those as your Valentine's Day fruits.
- Use other foods and phrases- Such as a dill pickle, and write, "You're kind of a big dill!" This is a stretch, but some kids like to eat tomatoes like apples so you could write on one, "I love you from my head tomatoes!" This would also be super cute to put in hubby's lunch with a knife so he could freshly slice the tomatoes for a sandwich or something like that. You could also fill a bag with berries, and write "You're berry cool!" on the bag, since the berries are too small and bumpy to write on individually. Another orange option is, "Well, orange you cute?!" For a kiwi, you could write "You hold the kiwi to my heart," on a little note, tape it to a toothpick, and stick it into the kiwi.
- Wash and pat dry fruit before writing- Because the fruit must be dry for the edible markers to work on the fruit, and they need to be washed in order to be eaten safely.

These fruits look like so much fun to make and with edible markers, how easy is that. Of course, you are very artistic and make it look like a breeze. Great activity to do with the kids and I am sure your little guy had a blast! Happy Valentines Day!
Becky
Abeer,
What a cute idea! These would make a hit in anybody's lunch box, even my big kid. I use Vaseline on my hands to help with the dryness. It's a little goopy, but it does the trick.
Nazneen
What I want to know is how long you took coming up with those messages! So cute. It's great and quick idea to add some Valentine joy!
Wendy Irene
These are so adorable! What a fun and loving idea
Liz

Tonia
Love this idea! I used to write messages on my kid's napkins.
Tina
I'm on pinterest a lot but have not seen this idea...I love it! I would do this all year long with my hubby, not just for Valentine's Day.
Asmita
Cute!
Lily
This is insanely cute! I've been meaning to get my hands on edible markers for a little while now but I never would've thought to do this. I love it! I really want to send my son to kindergarten (where baked treats are a no-no) with some of these decorated fruit for his classmates.
Brenda
Such a clever idea ... pinned!
Natalie
Very cute and clever, but the phrase is "apple of my eye" (singular).
Abeer Rizvi
hahahaha! I realized that when i was editing pictures but it was too late
Skye
Where did you find your edible markers? And/or what brand are they? I've been looking online for some but not seeing great reviews on the brands I've found... Would really love to be able to do these sweet little "love note" fruits!!
Abeer Rizvi
You can get edible markers from Amazon, Hobby Lobby or Michaels. I think Walmart sells them too. There are 2 brands that I have used: Wilton and AmeriColor. Personally, I like the AmeriColor brand coz the markers have a finer tip and you can write more easily with them.
I hope this helps
Corey
Thank you for the inspiration!
Abeer Rizvi
What a lovely roundup! Thanks for including my fruits
Mara
Do you think you could use regular washable nontoxic markers if you used fruit that you could peel. ex Banana, orange....
Abeer Rizvi
Some people are uncomfortable with using regular non-toxic markers. They think it's still unsafe. I would just say to use edible markers. They are made from food coloring and totally safe for consumption
Mara
OK thanks so much!
Vicki Stoner
Hi, I ordered some edible markers which arrived today and they don't even come close to looking like your fruit messages. The ink just pools into little globules and does not look at all nice. Which particular markers are you using?
Abeer Rizvi
I use Americolor edible markers. They have a fine tip and are very easy to use.
Some fruits have a waxy residue, which makes it kinda hard to write on them. If you wash them thoroughly and dry them, there shouldn't be any issues. Hope this helps
Joy
We rinse our fruits and veggies in a vinegar water bath to remove wax and dirt, etc. maybe that would make them easier to write on.
Abeer Rizvi
That's a great idea Joy! It would make writing sooooo much easier!
