This easy pretzel cake is a tall double layer chocolate cake with chocolate frosting. Then, it's covered in pretzels and topped off with chocolate peanut butter balls.

Today's recipe is so unique and a family favorite with some of the best flavors out there- chocolate, peanut butter, pretzels. I also think this is a wonderful cake for Fall and Thanksgiving parties because of its overall rustic appearance. What I love about this cake and others such as this Kit Kat Cake With Strawberries or this Easy Christmas Cake is that they are the easiest cakes to decorate because you don’t have to ice smoothly. It can be rough and messy and the flaws get hidden.

How To Make Chocolate Pretzel Cake Recipe From Scratch?

    1. Bake cakes- Cool completely.
    2. Prepare the frosting- As well as the energy balls.
    3. Trim, level, frost, and stack cakes- Frost them smoothly.
    4. Add pretzel rods and ribbon- All around.
    5. Arrange the energy balls- On top of the cake.
    6. Add chocolate squares- Between the energy balls.

    Variations

Try another frosting flavor- Such as Brown Sugar Frosting {So Fluffy!}, Caramel Frosting {3 ingredients}, Marshmallow Frosting Recipe or Peanut Butter Frosting {4 Ingredients}.

Try a different cake flavor- Such as Mexican Chocolate Cake, Best Vanilla Cake Recipe {From Scratch}, or this Coca Cola Cake.

Try another filling- Such as peanut butter on its own, Easy Caramelized Banana {With Cinnamon}, Chocolate Whipped Cream, Vanilla Custard.

Top off with other edible items- Such as fresh fruits and berries, Chocolate Mint Truffles, Red Velvet Truffles, Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Truffles, Chocolate Rum Balls, various candies, chocolate chips, macarons, Oreos, or other cookies. You can even cover the top in Homemade Sprinkles.

Add a drizzle- Such as Homemade Caramel Sauce , Dulce De Leche, Nutella Syrup, or Easy Chocolate Ganache.

Dip pretzels in chocolate- Then decorate with it. Use this Chocolate Covered Pretzels recipe to learn how to make them.

Use a different colored ribbon- To match the theme of the party or holiday at which you are serving this cake.

Tips And Techniques For Pretzel Cake

How to cut this cake? It is a little hard to cut. Make sure to remove the ribbons and don't forget to remove the energy balls before slicing or else they will be rolling all over the place.

What kind of chocolate bars to use? I used milk chocolate bars, but you can use dark chocolate with or without nuts, white chocolate, or even caramel filled chocolate bars.

Cool cake completely before icing- Because this prevents the frosting from melting right off the cake.

Level the cakes- This allows you to top the cake with energy balls. Otherwise, the energy balls will roll right off the uneven top of the cake.

Frost the entire cake- Make sure you don't skip this step. The frosting is what holds the pretzel sticks in place like glue.

Don't skip the ribbons- Because this ensures that the pretzels don't fall off the sides.

    Storage Of Iced Cake

Refrigerate- In a sealed container in the fridge for up to 3 days. Please note that the pretzels may become soggy.

Freeze- I do not recommend freezing this dessert because the pretzels will become soggy upon thawing.

    Ingredients

    • 2 Chocolate cakes Round, Dimensions: 6x3 each
    • 3 cups Chocolate ganache frosting Can use chocolate truffles instead
    • 15 No bake energy balls
    • 40 Pretzel rods
    • 2 Chocolate bars Cut into small square pieces

    Instructions

    • Bake chocolate cakes and allow them to cool completely.
    • While cakes are baking and cooling, prepare the frosting and energy balls.
    • Trim the domes of the cake and level them.
    • Place one cake on a serving dish.
    • Spread frosting on top smoothly.
    • Place the other cake on top of the icing.
    • Ice the entire cake in frosting.
    • Start sticking pretzel rods around your cake. The frosting acts like a glue and holds the pretzels in place.
    • Wrap a brown ribbon around the cake for extra security.
    • Next, arrange the energy balls on the top of the cake in somewhat of a dome shape. If you like, you can stick them to each other with some melted chocolate so that they don't move around.
    • Place some chocolate squares in between the energy balls. Enjoy!

    Notes

    • Read all my tips above.
    • Leftovers can be stored in a sealed container in the fridge for up to 3 days. Please note that the pretzels may become soggy.
