How to make marshmallow cake recipe from scratch? How to make heart cake?
- Bake cake- And let it cool completely.
- Make strawberry frosting- And color it pink to make it more vibrant.
- Cut out heart shapes- Using a large cookie cutter.
- Assemble and enjoy- Place one heart cake on a small plate and spread frosting on top. Add marshmallows. Place another cake on top. Spread frosting and add more marshmallows and sprinkles.
Marshmallow Cake vs. Smores cake
Smores cake is usually composed of chocolate cake that's filled and frosted with marshmallow fluff or marshmallow frosting. Then, it's decorated with crushed graham crackers, mini marshmallows and a drizzle of chocolate ganache. It's a delicious Summer cake. Today's marshmallow cake is different and is a chocolate cake, filled with strawberry frosting and decorated with mini marshmallows. It has a more romantic theme to it.
Variations
Try other decorations- Such as fresh fruits, sprinkles, chopped candy bars, chocolate chips, chopped nuts, shredded coconut and even fresh edible flowers.
Add a different filling- Such as Easy Homemade Strawberry Jam or other jams and preserves. You can even try thick Homemade Caramel Sauce or Homemade Dulce De Leche. Thick pie fillings work well too.
Consider another frosting flavor- Such as Caramel Frosting or Peanut Butter Frosting and if you want another fruit-based option, try this Blackberry Buttercream Frosting.
Make other shapes- Use any design of large cookie cutters to get your desired shape. Another option is to make a cardboard template of your choice and then use, a knife to cut out that shape.
Decorate with fondant- Ice the entire cake, omit the decorative toppings, and then use store-bought pink fondant or Homemade Marshmallow Fondant to cover the cake completely. Then, do some decorative piping work on top.
Marshmallow birthday cake- Decorate cake with lots of favorite candies for the special person, similar to my Best Birthday Cake.
Tips and Techniques
Chill cake overnight- This makes it easier to cut out perfect shapes without a crumbly mess.
Don't assemble warm cake- It has to cool completely because this prevents the icing from melting and making a sticky mess.
Line pan with parchment paper- This makes it easier to remove cake from the pan.
Keep cake covered- Since the sides of the cakes are all exposed to air, they will start becoming dry. To prevent that from happening, cover with saran wrap or store them in a sealed container.
Make large cake- Instead of making individual cakes, use a heart shaped cake pan and follow the same assembling/decorating method.
Where to find pink marshmallows? You can find them in the baking aisle at most grocery stores by the end of January. It is a seasonal item.
Color icing- The icing will naturally be pink because of strawberries but you can enhance the color even further with pink gel color or a few drops of red liquid color.
Storage
Refrigerate- In a sealed container for up to 3 days.
Freeze- Frosting and cakes can be frozen separately for up to 1 month and thawed in the fridge overnight. You may have to whip the frosting again. Then, assemble and decorate, as per instructions below.
Make ahead instructions- It can be made 1 day in advance. Cover and keep it in the fridge until you are ready to serve.
