Quick and easy Halloween cake (Twizzler Cake), homemade with simple ingredients. Frosted chocolate cake is decorated with orange, yellow, black candies.
According to my Mom, there is a child living inside me, refusing to grow up! No wonder she says that as often as she does because I enjoy candies and costumes just as much as any little kid out there. One of my favorite parts of Halloween is shopping for candies. So, after picking up a bag full of candies from the store, I got to work and a Halloween Twizzler cake was born! This is one of those easy cakes you can put together in very little time. Much like this Easy Christmas Cake and Kit Kat Cake {With Strawberries} which also features cake covered in, you guessed it, candy!
How To Make Easy Halloween Cake Recipe From Scratch?
- Bake the cakes- Cool completely. Prepare frosting, while cooling.
- Level the cakes- Place one cake on a serving dish.
- Assemble cake- Spread icing on top. Place the other cake on top and secure it into place. Ice the cake smoothly.
- Stick black Twizzlers around the cake- Trimming Twizzlers to the height of the cake.
- Wrap a ribbon around the cake- To hold Twizzlers in place.
- Spread candies on top of the cake- Add leftover Twizzlers pieces.
- Toss yellow Twizzlers bits around the base- Enjoy!
Variations For Spooky Cake
Try other cake flavors- Such as this Funfetti Cake/Confetti Cake {From Scratch}, or this Easy Rainbow Cake {With Cake Mix} but with Halloween colors, Best Vanilla Cake Recipe {From Scratch}, or this Best Red Velvet Cake {From Scratch}.
Try cake fillings- Such as Raspberry Pie Filling, Strawberry Pie Filling, or Cherry Pie Filling.
Try other frosting flavors- Such as Chocolate Ganache {2 Ingredients}, Chocolate Cream Cheese Frosting, or Healthy Coconut Cream Chocolate Frosting.
Use other candy on top- Use leftover Halloween candy on top, just be mindful of how heavy the candy is so the cake doesn't implode. You can use small candies, cut up candy bars, or stick suckers into the top of the cake.
Use different Halloween colors on top of the cake- Use green and purple candy, or red and yellow, or whatever combination feels spooky to you. Choose a ribbon color to match.
Tips And Techniques For Halloween Birthday Cake
Add black candles- If you are serving this for a birthday celebration.
Use a dark colored frosting- Do not use white frosting! Use dark or chocolate frosting because black licorice leaves black stains and they show through the cracks between the licorice.
Don't skip the ribbon around the Twizzlers- This prevents the Twizzlers from slipping and falling off the cake.
Trim the Twizzlers to the height of the cake- Do this before adding them to the cake for ease.
Level the cakes- This is important so that the candy has a flat surface to fill. Otherwise they will slide off the top of the cake.

Ingredients
- 2 Chocolate Cake Round, Dimensions: 8x2 each
- 3 cups Chocolate buttercream icing
- 15-20 Twizzlers Black
- 1 cup M&M candies Yellow and orange
Instructions
- Bake the cakes and allow them to cool completely.
- While the cakes are baking and cooling, prepare the frosting.
- Trim the domes off the cakes, if any, to ensure they are levelled.
- Place one cake on a serving dish.
- Spread icing on top.
- Place the other cake on top and press gently to secure it into place.
- Ice the entire cake smoothly in frosting.
- Start sticking black Twizzlers all around the sides of the cake. I had to cut Twizzlers in half with scissors to match the height of the cake. You may need to do that too.
- Wrap a bright orange ribbon around the cake to hold Twizzlers in place. Without this ribbon, some of the Twizzlers were falling over.
- Spread yellow and orange candies on top of the cake. I also cut up some leftover yellow and black Twizzlers into little pieces and tossed those on top.
- Toss some more yellow Twizzler bits around the base. Enjoy!
Notes
- Read all my tips above.
- Leftovers can be stored in a sealed container in the fridge for up to 3 days. Please note that candies may become sticky from the moisture in the refrigerator.

Loveeee the colours on that cake! Yes you are absolutely right, there's nothing wrong with buying a cake mix when you are busy, especially if it tastes that good. You can make anything look pretty though, wish we celebrated Halloween as much so I can make cakes like this!

This looks incredible. I never expect anything less than incredible from you! I did something similar a few weeks ago with kit kats and m&ms. I have to admit though, licorice is top of my sweets list!
