How To Make Easy Spider Cake?

  1. Bake, cool, level, and frost cakes– Ice the entire cake in frosting smoothly.
  2. Roll out red fondant– Spread it over the iced cake.
  3. Smooth and cut off excess– With a pizza cutter.
  4. Cut different sizes of Twizzler ropes– With a knife or scissors.
  5. Arrange the Twizzler rope pieces- In the shape of a spider web.
  6. Make border– With cut up yellow Twizzlers.
  7. Make Oreo spider cookies– And stick them.

Variations For Spider Web Cake

Black widow cake– Paint a red hour glass shape on the back of the Oreos for this version.

Make a fondant spider- Mold fondant it into a spider just like you would with play doh or clay. Use this spider in addition or in place of the Oreo spiders.

Make a tiered cake– Double the amount of cake made, and create a multi-layer cake. You may need to use dowels to support the tiers depending on how many you add.

Make a taller cake- Double the cake recipe and add more layers. You must use a dowel rod for support and to prevent the cake from falling over.

Try other cake flavors– Such as this Funfetti Cake/Confetti Cake {From Scratch}, Moist Triple Chocolate Cake {From Scratch}, Best Vanilla Cake Recipe {From Scratch}, or this Easy Pumpkin Recipe With Cake Mix.

Try other frosting flavors– Such as Chocolate Cream Cheese Frosting, Chocolate Ganache Frosting {2 Ingredients}, Marshmallow Frosting Recipe, or American Buttercream Frosting.

Try another color combination- Like orange, greens, yellow, black, purple, gray, or any other spooky Halloween color combos you like.

Tips and Techniques for Homemade Halloween Cake

Use kitchen shears to cut the Twizzlers– You can use a knife, but if you like to have your small kids involved, the scissors can be a little bit easier.

What kind of Twizzlers to use for the web? I used the “Pull N Peel” version in black, but you could also use green for more spooky fun.

How to crush Oreos? Place them in a sealed Ziploc bag (with the air squeezed out), and crush them with a rolling pin.

Roll fondant evenly– This helps prevent the fondant from tearing while placing it on the cake.

Cut excess fondant with a pizza cutter– This makes getting around the round bottom edge of the cake much easier than using a knife.

How to attach spiders? You can use royal icing or melted chocolate to adhere them in place.

Storage of Decorated Cakes

Refrigerate– In a sealed container for up to 3 days.

Freeze– I would not recommend freezing this cake with the Oreos and Twizzlers on it because they will not hold up well when thawing plus fondant becomes sticky from all the condensation.

Yield: 9 Slices

Ingredients

Instructions

  • Bake cakes and allow them to cool completely.
  • While cakes are baking and cooling, prepare the frosting.
  • Slice off the domes of the cakes, if there are any, so they are levelled and straight.
  • Place one cake on a cake stand.
  • Spread icing on top.
  • Place the other cake on top.
  • Ice the entire cake in frosting smoothly.
  • Roll out red fondant and spread it gently over the iced cake.
  • Smooth it out and cut off excess from the base with a pizza cutter.
  • Use scissors or a sharp knife to cut different sizes of Twizzler ropes.
  • Arrange the Twizzler rope pieces in the shape of a spider web on the top of the cake. Press them until they stick into place. You can stick them more securely by brushing some water or corn syrup.
  • If you like, you can also make a spider web with Twizzler ropes along the side of the cake.
  • Sprinkle some crushed Oreos all over the cake.
  • Cut up some yellow Twizzlers and place them around the base of your cake as a cool border.
  • Make Oreo spider cookies, as per the instructions in the link above. Just omit the step where you cover them in sprinkles unless you want sprinkly spiders.
  • Place these spiders on top of the cake and the sides or wherever else you like. You can stick them securely into place with some royal icing or melted chocolate. Enjoy!
