How to make fondant flower cake?
- Make flowers– Cut small white fondant circles and place them on top of the rolled out pink fondant. Flatten with rolling pin. Use flower cutter to cut out pieces. Place them on flower-forming cups. Make centers with white fondant balls covered in blue sugar and stick them in the middle. Let them dry until they harden.
- Bake cakes- The flavor is up to you.
- Let it cool- Until it’s room temperature.
- Make icing- And color it blue.
- Assemble– Place one cake on cake stand, ice the top, then, place the other cake on top and then, ice the whole cake.
- Add icing details- Pipe a swirl of frosting on top of the cake and use spatula to create a vertical pattern on the sides.
- Decorate- Gently place the dried flower on top of the cake.
Variations
Make a larger cake- This is a small 6 inch cake but you can make more flowers and use them to make a tiered cake or the typical 8 inch cake.
Decorate cupcakes- I decorated a cake but make smaller flowers and use them as cupcake toppers.
Do a cascading design- Make smaller flowers and stick them cascading down the side of the cake.
Try other colors- I chose a pink, blue and white color theme but you can use any colors you like.
Cover cake with fondant- I only iced the cake in frosting but yon make it even more polished by covering it in blue fondant. Then, stick the flower on top with royal icing.
Try other cake flavors- Such as Easy Key Lime Cake or this Pineapple Cake (With Cake Mix).
Try other frosting flavors– Such as Marshmallow Frosting or the classic American Buttercream Frosting. They are both white and can easily be colored with liquid food coloring or gel colors.
Tips and Techniques
Homemade fondant vs. Marshmallow fondant- Either can be used. I prefer homemade fondant because it tastes really good. Also, you can buy pre-colored fondant and that means less work for you.
Don’t decorate a warm cake- This is very important because if the cake is warm, the icing as well as the decorations will start melting and get sticky and messy.
Decorations must be dry– If the flower is not dry, it will not hold its curved shape.
Use gum paste or combination of half fondant and half gum paste– This allows the flowers to dry quicker.
How long does it take for fondant flowers to dry? Typically, it takes 24 hours. However, the drying time may vary. It depends on the thickness that you rolled out the fondant. The thinner it is, the faster it dries. The thicker it is, the slower it dries. Drying time is also quicker when you live in dry climates where there is little to no humidity.
Is marzipan and fondant the same thing? No, fondant is made with marshmallows and marzipan is made with ground almonds.
Storage
Room temperature- Store decorated cake in a covered box for 24 hours.
Refrigerate– Store in a covered box for 3-5 days. Try not to touch the decorations as it's coming to room temperature to prevent sticky smudge marks.
Freeze– Fondant decorations cannot be frozen and have to be stored at room temperature for up to 1 month, once completely dry. Decorated cakes cannot be frozen because when they thaw, the fondant decorations become sticky due to condensation.
Leftovers- Leftover cake after the party can be stored in a sealed container in the fridge for up to 3 days.
