This is a very easy way to decorate cakes but still looks like you spent hours making it. You can get as creative as you like with the color combinations. For this cake, I went with earthy brown shades because I wanted to serve it on Thanksgiving and Fall events, along with this Chocolate Tree Cake (Fall or Thanksgiving) and Turkey Cake (Thanksgiving Cake).

Key ingredients
- Fondant- I recommend making your own marshmallow fondant (MMF).
- Gel food coloring- Inexpensive and won't make your fondant sticky and hard to work with like the liquid kind.
Here is another cake that uses the same fondant technique but instead of Whopper and Oreos, I decorated with Hershey's Kisses.

Variations
- Pink marble shades- Use pink and white fondant and mix them together roughly and roll it out so that streaks of both colors are visible.
- Black and white design- Use black and white fondant mix them together roughly and roll it out so that streaks of both colors are visible.
- Rainbow or tie dye pattern- Use fondant in all the rainbow colors and mix them together roughly and roll it out so that streaks of all colors are visible.
- Gold effect- Use dark and light shades of brown fondant and mix them together roughly and roll it out so that streaks of both colors are visible. Then, use a paintbrush to go over some streaks with edible gold paint.
- Cut out shapes- To use as decorations on cupcakes and cakes.
- Create little sculptures- Like a dinosaur, bee, or pansies.
- Use this to Make cake toppers- Like I did with these Easy Bows or Easy Flowers.
- Decorate cookies- Such as Sports Cookies or Flower Cookies.
- Mix in a different extracts- To change the overall flavor profile.
How to marble fondant for cakes with food coloring?
- Prepare light and dark shades of fondant- Using gel food coloring (Image 1).
- Roll them both- Into long ropes (Image 2).
- Place them side by side- And roll them together into a spiral pattern (Image 3).
- Shape into a rough ball- Then knead it just a little to show streaks of both colors (Image 4).
- Using a rolling pin- Roll out the ball of combined fondant (Image 5).
- Drape directly over- Prepared frosted cake (Image 6).
- Smooth and trim the edges- Then decorate cake as desired (Image 7 and 8).

Tips and techniques
- Dust powdered sugar- Before rolling the fondant out to prevent sticking.
- Use a pizza cutter- To make the cutting easier and smoother.
- Steam it- To make it a nice sheen and also get rid of any leftover powdered sugar.
- Use gel food coloring, not liquid- And check out this post on How to Color Fondant for more help.
- Wear gloves when mixing fondant colors- Because otherwise your hands will be stained with whatever colors you are using, especially if they are dark.
- Wrap in saran wrap- If you are not using it right away to keep it from drying out.
- I recommend using marshmallow fondant- Because it is easy to make and inexpensive.
- Let sit for a few hours or overnight- So that the colors can deepen.
Recipe FAQs
Instead of fondant, you use a light and dark shade of the same color of icing. For example, to make green marble effect, you would use dark green and light green colored icings. Apply them on the cake randomly and smooth it with a spatula so that both streaks of colors are visible.
Use 3 shades of fondant: dark blue, light blue and white. Blend them together roughly and roll it out so that the streaks of all three shades are still visible. Then, spread them on a frosted cake. This will look like ocean waves.
Don't over stretch it, make sure to knead it well, and keep it hydrated (but not sticky). Be sure not to add too much powdered sugar and know that shortening can help moisten it.
Storage
- Make ahead- This is an easy recipe to make a few days before needed. Just keep in saran wrap at room temperature.
- Room temperature- Wrap in saran wrap and use within 3-5 hours.
- Refrigerate- It keeps for longer in the fridge (up to 3 days), just keep in mind that the moisture in the fridge will make it a bit sticky.
- Freeze- This is not recommended, because the fondant will get sticky upon thawing.

Ingredients
- 2 Vegan chocolate cake (Eggless cake) Round, Dimensions: 8x2 each
- 4 cups Coconut cream chocolate frosting
- 2 cups Marshmallow fondant You need equal quantities of dark brown and light brown shades.
- ½ cup Whopper candies
- 30-35 Oreos I always keep extras on hand in case some break.
Instructions
- Bake cakes and allow them to cool completely.
- While the cakes are baking and cooling, prepare the frosting.
- To assemble the cake, place one cake on a serving dish, spread icing on top and place the other cake on top. Press gently and the ice the entire cake smoothly. Keep aside.
- Prepare light and dark shades of brown fondant using gel food coloring.
- Roll both of them into long "sausage" shapes.
- Align them together and start rolling them into a spiral shape.
- Some people like to just roll it out at this point but I feel like that gives a cool spiral pattern rather than an abstract marble one. Now, just randomly squeeze it into a rough ball shape and knead it a little. Don't knead too much. You should still be able to see streaks of both colors.
- Use a rolling pin to roll out this ball of fondant.
- Spread this over your frosted cake.
- Decorate with Whopper candies and Oreo cookies. Stick them into place with melted chocolate.
Notes
- I highly recommend using gel food coloring instead of liquid food coloring or else your fondant will become too sticky.
- If your fondant is too sticky and hard to roll out, sprinkle powdered sugar on your surface and that will make it much easier to handle.
- Don't decorate a warm cake. The cake must cool completely before you ice it and spread fondant over it or else you will end up with a sticky mess.
- If you want to change the flavor of your fondant, you can mix in extracts of your choice.
- Read additional tips and variations above.
- Leftovers can be stored in a sealed container in the fridge for up to 3 days but the fondant decorations may become sticky from the moisture in the fridge. You can leave it out at room temperature 3-5 hours.

So, I read the ingredients of this recipe and was also wondering if the type of oil makes a difference? Meaning that if I don't have light olive oil, can I use vegetable oil? Corn oil?
Abeer Rizvi
You can easily replace olive oil with vegetable oil, canola oil or corn oil. I would stay away from extra virgin oil, as it's heavier and adds a distinct flavor to baked goods. Hope this helps
Alex
I love that effect. And it's so much fun to choose the right colours / tones.
