I think baby gender reveal parties are so much fun. I didn't have one when I was pregnant because it wasn't really a common concept back then. However, if I was to go back in time, I would totally have a baby shower celebration cake to share the news with my loved ones. I love the element of surprise.
Since the cake is iced in pink and blue on the outside, no one knows what the gender of the baby is until a slice is cut out and the frosting inside is finally visible. Making cakes for kids is one of my favorite things to do and I enjoyed making this one just as much as this Easy Karate Cake (Black Belt Cake) and this Easy Caterpillar Cake.

Key ingredients for pink and blue cake
- Chocolate cake- You will need 2 round cakes either homemade or store bought.
- Frosting- Buttercream will be used in this recipe, both blue and pink.
- Sparkling sugar- This recipe uses a lot in order to bring in that nice sparkle.
- Candy balls- Large ones colored pink, white, and blue.
Variations of baby shower cake
- Make a tiered cake- Similar to a Wedding Cake but with the relevant color theme.
- Bake another batch of cakes- And stack them on top of these 2 cakes to make a tall double barrel cake. Make sure to use dowels for support.
- Instead of the abstract icing design- That I have done, you can also make a pink and blue Rosette Cake which would be very unique. It would look very beautiful on the dessert table too.
- Use sprinkles instead of sparkling sugar- And cover the entire cake in pink and blue sprinkles, similar to my Rainbow Sprinkle Cake.
- Make a pinata cake- And fill it with the relevant gender color in the form of sprinkles or candies. It's a fun surprise hidden inside the cake and makes a dramatic experience at the party.
- Try other cake flavors- Such as this Funfetti Cake, strawberry, Moist Lemon Cake, or even cookies and cream.
- Pair with another frosting flavor- Make sure it's white to begin with so that it can easily be colored with food coloring. Some good options to use include Almond Buttercream Frosting, Marshmallow Frosting Recipe, Best Cream Cheese Frosting, and White Chocolate Buttercream Frosting.
- Try a cute teddy bear topper- Instead of the cardboard topper I used. There are so many in the market these days that are perfect for this party theme.
- Go lighter- My frosting colors were brighter but you can go lighter and make a pastel cake and that's very elegant.
- Make a different shaped cake- Instead of a round cake, use a different shape of pan. For example, a heart cake would be adorable!
- Make a yellow cake or vanilla cake- And color the batter blue and pink. Just keep the icing white and then when you slice into it, the color of the cake will reveal the gender. A good option for this would be this Best Vanilla Cake Recipe.
- Use your imagination- And use a variety of different candies and toppers you desire. Get creative and have fun with the process.
How to make easy homemade gender reveal cake with buttercream icing?
- Bake cakes and allow to cool- While you prepare frostings.
- Place one cake on a serving dish- Spread blue or pink icing on top.
- Place the other cake on top- Of the icing and press to gently secure.
- Spread pink and blue icing- To cover the entire cake (Image 1).
- Cover the entire cake- In sanding sugar (Image 2).
- Push the cake topper- Into the middle of the cake (Image 3).
- Stick on large candy balls- With buttercream along the top edge (Image 4).
Tips and techniques
- Sanding sugar cannot be replaced with granulated sugar- Because it is not the same thing. Sanding sugar comes in many different colors and is a bigger size whereas the granulated sugar is just white and the smaller grains will melt into the frosting.
- Use a clean spatula to spread frosting- And swirl a pattern of both colors so that they are both prominent. They should not completely blend in together.
- After applying sanding sugar- Remove the excess from the dish with a clean paintbrush. Keep in a sealed Ziploc bag for another baking project.
- Wait until cake is fully cooled- Before frosting, because the icing will melt otherwise.
- Be sure to use clean or separate frosting bags- For each color of icing so that the colors don't mix and become purple.
Storage
- Room temperature- This can be left on the counter for 2-3 hours.
- Refrigerate- Store in a sealed container for up to 3 days.
- Freeze- Store in a sealed container for up to 1 month.
- Make ahead- And save it for later by placing it in a sealed container in the fridge up to 3 days before serving. You can also make it up to 1 month in advance, place it in a sealed container in the freezer, and when you're ready simply thaw it in the fridge and serve.
Recipe FAQs
Make at least two or more round cakes. They can be the same size or various sizes. Place one cake on a serving dish or cake board, top it with frosting or filling, then place a second cake on top. Repeat this until you are out of cakes. If you do 4 or more cakes, it is important to use dowels for structural support. Then frost the entire cake.
Be sure you start the process right after frosting so that the icing can act as a wet glue to stick the sprinkles to. Using gloves can help. Work you way from the bottom of the cake to top, using your hand or a spoon to sprinkle on the decorations gently until everything is covered.
This happens when you don't wait for the cake to fully cool before applying the icing. Be sure you cake is completely cooled.

- 20 Large candy balls Pink, white and blue
Instructions
- Bake chocolate cakes as per the link above.

- While the cakes are baking and cooling, prepare the pink and blue frostings.
- Remove cake from pans and trim the domes (if any) so they are flat.

- Use a spatula to spread pink and blue icing randomly on top of the cake and along the sides of the cake.
- Use a clean spatula to spread this frosting smoothly until you have a swirled pattern of both colors. Both colors should be prominent and should not completely blend in together.
- Cover the entire cake in sanding sugar. Remove excess sugar from the serving dish with a clean paintbrush and keep aside in a sealed Ziploc bag for another cake decorating project.
- Use a dollop of buttercream to stick large candy balls along the top outer edge of the cake.
- Push the cake topper in the middle of the cake. Enjoy!
Notes
- You don't have to use the exact same topper or candy balls I used. There are so many varieties in the market these days. Get creative and use whatever you like.
- Don't assemble and decorate a warm cake because the icing will melt.
- Try a different cake flavor like vanilla, strawberry, cookies and cream e.t.c.
- Pair with another frosting flavor. I think almond frosting would be delicious.
- Read additional tips and variations above.
- Leftovers can be stored in a sealed container in the fridge for up to 3 days.
