Hello everyone! I am so excited to be back to blogging with this new tutorial! It's just as cute as my Gender Reveal Cake (Baby Shower) and this Twins Birthday Cake (Two Peas in a Pod). My absence from the blogosphere was valid though because Hubby and I welcomed our first child into the family... A beautiful baby boy! I can't get over how tiny he is with his little hands and feet.

I wanted to make something cute to celebrate the occasion but I wasn't sure what to make and then, it finally hit me. Babies cry a lot! When they are hungry, they cry. When they poop, they cry. Even when they are bored they cry and that is what inspired this cake.

    Key ingredients

    • Funfetti cake- Make it homemade, buy it from the store, or use a cake mix.
    • Frosting- I used almond buttercream for this, but you can choose your favorite flavor.
    • Marshmallow fondant- You will at least need the colors black, red, and white.

    Variations

    • Change the expression- To any emotion, like a cute happy face. Even add some rosy cheeks.
    • Omit the hair- To make a bald baby. You can also add a hat, bonnet, or bow.
    • Change up the colors- Including hair and skin color.
    • To further personalize the baby face- Add a collar (frilly or plain), bow tie (polka dot, plain, or stripe), or pearl necklace.
    • Fill the cake- Look at How to Make a Pinata Cake (Easter Robin Egg Cake) and How to Make Filled Cupcakes (Stuffed Cupcakes) for tips and tricks on how to do this well. You can use various fillings, such as Chocolate Ganache, Caramel Sauce, Homemade Vanilla Pudding (Best), or  Raspberry Pie Filling.
    • Use a different cake flavor- Such as Marble Cake, Vanilla Cake or Strawberry Crunch Cake.
    • Make it a gender reveal cake- By filling it with green or blue frosting, filling, or candies.
    • Make with frosting instead of fondant- Some people just like the taste of frosting more than fondant. It can be harder to get the same look, but it can be done. You can try Swiss Meringue Buttercream Frosting, Black Icing and Red Frosting.

How to make an easy baby cake with fondant?

    1. Bake, cool and ice cake- Then cover with desired color of fondant (Image 1).
    2. Form the ears- And attach each to a toothpick (Image 2).
    3. Carefully slide the ears- Opposite sides of the cake (Image 3).
    4. Form the mouth and eyes- Using various colors of fondant (Image 4).
    5. Make the nose- By rolling a small piece of fondant into a round ball (Image 5).
    6. Place facial expressions on- By brushing the backs with water and sticking it to the cake (Image 6).
    7. Roll and twist piece of fondant- To use for the hair and attach it to a toothpick (Image 7).
    8. Place hair piece- On top of the cake and enjoy (Image 8).

    Tips and techniques

    • To trim fondant use a pizza cutter– Because this makes cutting around the cake so much easier and smoother than using a knife.
    • I recommend just buying the black fondant- Because it is very hard to get a nice black color at home.
    • Steam the cake- In order to get rid of any powdered sugar residue.
    • Be sure your cake is fully cooled before decorating- Because the fondant will get sticky and melt and you will have a mess.
    • I like to chill my iced cakes in the fridge before decorating- Because this makes them firm and easier to decorate with fondant.
    • Dust your work area with powdered sugar- To make it easier to work with the fondant. It makes it less sticky and also less prone to rips.

    Recipe FAQs

    Why did my fondant crack?

This happens when the fondant dries out, so I recommend working quickly. It's best to place the fondant on the cake immediately after rolling it out. This way you can mold it before it can dry out and crack.

Do I have to steam the cake?

No, but I highly recommend it if you ever use fondant, because it soaks in the extra powdered sugar from rolling and gives a nice finished look overall.

    Why is the fondant sweating?

If the cake is not fully cooled off this can happen because it causes moisture to build and the fondant to melt. It can also be caused by excess time in a fridge or freezer where moisture is found.

    Storage

    • Make ahead- This can easily be made in advance so you don't have to stress about the cake and the party in the same day. However, I wouldn't do more than a day or two in the fridge or else the fondant gets sticky.
    • Room temperature- This can be left out for 2-3 hours.
    • Refrigerate- Place in a sealed container in the fridge for up to 3 days.
    • Freeze- I don't recommend this because upon thawing, condensation will make the fondant sticky. What you can do is make the cake and frosting ahead of time and freeze separately in sealed containers for up to 1 month. When you are ready, simply thaw and decorate.

    Ingredients

    • 2 Funfetti cake Round, Dimensions: 8x2 each
    • 3 cups Almond buttercream frosting
    • Marshmallow fondant Brown, black, red, white

    Instructions

    • Bake cakes and allow them to cool completely.
    • While the cakes are baking and cooling, prepare the frosting.
    • To assemble the cake, place one cake on a serving dish, spread icing on top and place the other cake on top. Press gently and the ice the entire cake smoothly.
    • Roll out brown fondant and spread it over the cake. Smooth it out with a fondant smoother. Cut off excess along the base with a sharp knife. This will be the face of the baby.
    • For the ears, cut out two “moon-like” cardboard pieces.Make sure they are about the same size. Brush a thin layer of royal icing or corn syrup on these cardboard pieces and then cover them in brown fondant.Use tape or a glue gun to attach a toothpick behind each cardboard ear. Press these toothpicks on either sides of your cake. Now, your baby has ears!
    • Our baby had lots of hair when he was born and I wanted this baby cake to have some hair too. For this, roll out black fondant into a “snake” form and then arrange it in a spiral shape. Push a toothpick into the base.
    • For the nose, roll out a ball using brown fondant.
    • For the mouth, cut out a black fondant circle, a red fondant leaf and two small white fondant squares. Use an edible marker to draw a line on the red leaf like I did.
    • For the eyes, just cut out a “V” shape using black fondant and bend the ends downward.
    • To put everything together, brush some water behind the mouth, nose and eye pieces and stick them onto the cake.
    • Push the hair piece on the top of the cake and you are done. Enjoy.

    Notes

    • Don’t worry about all the white powdered sugar on the cake. I use this to prevent the fondant from sticking to my surface when I am rolling it out. Once you are done making the cake, you can steam the cake from a distance and the white marks will disappear.
    • Try other cake and frosting flavors.
    • I am brown which is why this cake has a brown skin tone but you can adjust that accordingly.
    • You can use store-bought fondant instead of making it at home because it's quick and convenient.
    • Use gel colors for tinting fondant. Do not use liquid food coloring which can turn it into a sticky mess.  Instead of coloring fondant yourself, you can save time and buy pre-colored fondant.
    • Read additional tips and variations above.
    • Leftovers can be stored in a sealed container in the fridge for up to 3 days but please note that the moisture from the refrigerator will cause the fondant decorations to become sticky.
