Ingredients

Instructions

  • Bake cakes and allow them to cool completely.
  • While the cakes are baking and cooling, prepare the frosting.
  • To assemble the cake, place one cake on a serving dish, spread icing on top and place the other cake on top. Press gently and the ice the entire cake smoothly.
  • Roll out brown fondant and spread it over the cake. Smooth it out with a fondant smoother. Cut off excess along the base with a sharp knife. This will be the face of the baby.
  • For the ears, cut out two “moon-like” cardboard pieces.Make sure they are about the same size. Brush a thin layer of royal icing or corn syrup on these cardboard pieces and then cover them in brown fondant.Use tape or a glue gun to attach a toothpick behind each cardboard ear. Press these toothpicks on either sides of your cake. Now, your baby has ears!
  • Our baby had lots of hair when he was born and I wanted this baby cake to have some hair too. For this, roll out black fondant into a “snake” form and then arrange it in a spiral shape. Push a toothpick into the base.
  • For the nose, roll out a ball using brown fondant.
  • For the mouth, cut out a black fondant circle, a red fondant leaf and two small white fondant squares. Use an edible marker to draw a line on the red leaf like I did.
  • For the eyes, just cut out a “V” shape using black fondant and bend the ends downward.
  • To put everything together, brush some water behind the mouth, nose and eye pieces and stick them onto the cake.
  • Push the hair piece on the top of the cake and you are done. Enjoy.

Notes

  • Don’t worry about all the white powdered sugar on the cake. I use this to prevent the fondant from sticking to my surface when I am rolling it out. Once you are done making the cake, you can steam the cake from a distance and the white marks will disappear.
  • Try other cake and frosting flavors.
  • I am brown which is why this cake has a brown skin tone but you can adjust that accordingly.
  • You can use store-bought fondant instead of making it at home because it's quick and convenient.
  • Use gel colors for tinting fondant. Do not use liquid food coloring which can turn it into a sticky mess.  Instead of coloring fondant yourself, you can save time and buy pre-colored fondant.
  • Read additional tips and variations above.
  • Leftovers can be stored in a sealed container in the fridge for up to 3 days but please note that the moisture from the refrigerator will cause the fondant decorations to become sticky.
