These are so fun for space themed parties, such as Star Wars, Guardians of the Galaxy, or even something strange like Dr. Who. In fact I have a Star Wars Cake that would go great alongside these cookies. But the best part is that they not only look amazing but taste delicious. If you want more desserts with this theme, check out my Galaxy Cupcakes and Galaxy Cake, because these desserts are, well, out of this world! I just had to say it.

Key ingredients for easy space cookies
- Chocolate chip cookies- These can be bought or homemade at various sizes.
- Buttercream icing- You will need pink, blue, black, and purple colors.
- Sprinkles- You can make it easy and just purchase a space themed mix.
Variations
- Use a different frosting flavor- Such as Marshmallow Frosting, White Chocolate Buttercream Frosting, or Best Cream Cheese Frosting. These frostings are white so are still easily colored.
- Try fancy pipe decoration- By using Royal Icing or Glace Icing.
- Use colorful melted chocolate- To create a splatter design on top of each cookie instead of frosting.
- Make cookie sandwiches- With a filling such as Stabilized Whipped Cream, Chocolate Whipped Cream, Dulce De Leche, marshmallow cream, Chocolate Ganache Frosting, Cream Cheese Frosting, or various ice cream flavors.
- Get creative and decorate with- Homemade Marshmallow Fondant or Modeling Chocolate.
- Instead of chocolate chip cookies- Use cut out cookies such as Easy Cutout Sugar Cookies, Easy Chocolate Sugar Cookies, Easy Funfetti Cookies, or even these Pistachio Cookies.
- Instead of buttercream- Use my super popular Best Sugar Cookie Frosting. Everyone who tries it loves it!
- Use a different icing tip- To make different shapes and swirls as decorations on top of the cookie.
- Add some edible silver dust- This is optional for an extra galactic shimmer.
How to make easy galaxy cookies recipe with buttercream icing or frosting?
- Bake cookies- And allow them to fully cool.
- Prepare the icing- And color with gel food coloring.
- Pipe or spoon- Rows of the different colored icings on saran wrap (Image 1).
- Roll the saran wrap- Into a log and twist both ends (Image 2).
- Slide it through a piping bag- With a tip attached and snip off a corner of the bag.
- Roll piping bag- To roughly mix colors.
- Frost a swirl of icing- On top of each cookie.
- Toss sprinkles- Over the icing and enjoy.
Tips and Techniques
- When filling the piping bag- I like to use more black frosting than bright colors to get the perfect look.
- To pipe the frosting- I like to use a Wilton Tip # 1M or equivilant.
- Allow cookies to fully cool before frosting- Because otherwise they will melt and become a gooey mess.
- Use full fat ingredients- For the best flavor and texture.
- Use room temperature ingredients- To encourage fully mixed ingredients with a smooth consistency.
Recipe FAQs
Use gel or liquid food coloring. I highly recommend gel because it is less likely to cause a watered down frosting.
No, because the frosting, though stable, won't hold its form under the pressure of other cookies and it will ruin your pretty design. Buttercream does not fully harden.
Storage
- Room temperature- Place in a sealed container and use within 1-2 days.
- Refrigerate- Place frosted cookies in a single layer in a sealed container for up to 3 days.
- Freeze- I don't recommend this, because they can become soggy upon thawing. Instead, you can freeze the cookies and icing separately for up to 1 month. When you are ready to assemble, let them thaw and follow the instructions in the recipe card below.
- Make ahead- You can make these cookies and place in a sealed container in the fridge up to 3 days before serving. You can also freeze the frosting and cookies separately in sealed containers, thaw, decorate, then serve.
