Easy Banana Crumble {Banana Crisp}

Quick and easy banana crumble recipe, homemade with simple ingredients. This banana crisp is loaded with fresh bananas, cinnamon, vanilla and crunchy oat topping. Also known as banana cobbler.

How To Make Banana Crumble Recipe From Scratch?

  1. Prepare banana filling– Heat butter in a saucepan over medium heat.
  2. Mix ingredients– Add brown sugar, cinnamon powder and mix until sugar dissolves. Then, add apple juice, vanilla extract and cook.
  3. Pour mixture– Remove from heat. Pour sugar mixture in an oven-safe rectangle baking dish.
  4. Coat banana chunks– Add banana chunks. Mix so they are coated in the sugar mixture.
  5. Spread bananas– Evenly in the dish. Keep aside.
  6. Prepare topping– Mixing together oats, flour, brown sugar, butter, cinnamon powder, vanilla extract in a large bowl. Cut the butter into the flour/oat mixture until you have a crumbly mixture. Stir in chopped pecans.
  7. Spread mixture– On top of the banana filling evenly.
  8. Bake it– At 350 degrees F for 20-25 minutes.
  9. Cool it– Remove from oven. Let it cool for 15 minutes.
  10. Serve it– With whipped cream.

Tips And Techniques For Banana Cobbler

Why is my crumble not crispy? How to fix a soggy crumble? Serve it immediately! When it comes out fresh from the oven, the topping is the crispiest it will be. Let it cool at room temperature and don’t cover it with anything because that will make it soggy.

Why is my crumble dry? Oftentimes, this means the ingredients were not measured properly. Not enough liquid/butter/ fresh fruits were added. Use measuring cups and measuring spoons. Another reason for dry crumble is over-baking. If it’s over-baked, all the moisture evaporates and dries up the dessert.

Don’t use bananas that are too ripe– Make sure the bananas are ripe, but if they are too ripe they will be mushy and it will fall apart.

Make a thicker crisp topping- Simply double the ingredients and use that on top.

Use unsalted butter- This prevents the dish from becoming too salty.

Should my topping mix be dry and crumbly? Yes it should be dry and crumbly. Do not add any liquid. That’s what makes it so crispy and crunchy at the end. Too much liquid makes a soggy crumble.

Storage

Refrigerate– In a sealed container for 2-3 days.

Freeze– I do not recommend freezing because the crisp on top will be soft and “mushy” when thawed and reheated.

Reheat– In the microwave or oven.

Ingredients

Banana Filling

  • 2 tbsp Butter Unsalted
  • 1/2 cup Brown sugar
  • 1/4 tsp Cinnamon powder
  • 1/4 cup Apple juice Or any other fruit juice of your choice
  • 1 tsp Vanilla extract
  • 5 Bananas Cut into big chunks

Crumble Topping

  • 3/4 cup Old-fashioned oats Cannot be replaced with quick oats
  • 1/2 cup All-purpose flour
  • 1/3 cup Brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup Butter Cold, Unsalted, Cut into cubes
  • 1 tsp Cinnamon powder
  • 1 tsp Vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup Pecans Or walnuts, Roughly chopped

Garnish/Topping

Instructions

  • Prepare the banana filling by heating butter in a nonstick saucepan over medium heat.
  • Add brown sugar, cinnamon powder and mix until sugar dissolves completely.
  • Add apple juice, vanilla extract and cook for 1-2 minutes or until mixture thickens a bit.
  • Remove from heat and pour this sugar mixture in an oven-safe rectangle baking dish (Dimensions: 7×11 or 8×12).
  • Add banana chunks and mix them gently so they are coated in the sugar mixture.
  • Spread them out evenly in the dish. Keep aside.
  • Prepare the topping by mixing together oats, flour, brown sugar, butter, cinnamon powder, vanilla extract in a large bowl. Use a pastry cutter or a large fork to cut the butter into the flour/oat mixture until you have a crumbly mixture. Do not add milk or water to thin it out.
  • Stir in chopped pecans.
  • Spread this mixture on top of the banana filling evenly.
  • Bake at 350 degrees F for 20-25 minutes or until topping is golden brown.
  • Remove from oven and let it cool for about 15 minutes.
  • Then, serve with whipped cream.
