If you have any ugly ripe bananas lying around, put them to good use with this recipe today. If you are still looking for more inspiration, be sure to check out this collection of Ripe Banana Recipes. This is my Mom's recipe and even after trying countless recipes from cookbooks, magazines and websites, I always come back to this family favorite. I even tried the healthy 3 ingredient version but really didn't care for it much. These are just as delicious as my Easy Caramelized Bananas (With Cinnamon) and this Banana Upside Down Cake (With Cake Mix) as well as this Pumpkin Banana Bread (With Cake Mix).

    Key ingredients

    • Butter- Be sure it is unsalted.
    • Sugars- Use both brown and granulated.
    • Egg- It should be large and room temperature.
    • Banana- Use your ripe ones that are easily mashed.
    • Vanilla extract- Wraps in a warm aroma.
    • Flour- You simply need the classic all-purpose.
    • Baking powder- Acts as a rising agent.
    • Cinnamon powder- Brings in that classic flavor.
    • Chocolate chips- You can use semisweet, milk, or dark.

    Variations

    • Use other flavor chips- Such as peanut butter, toffee, or white chocolate.
    • Try a different flavor extract- Such as almond, maple, or lemon.
    • Frost the tops with extra chocolate- Using Healthy Coconut Cream Chocolate Frosting, Chocolate Ganache Frosting, or Chocolate Cream Cheese Frosting.
    • Dip them- Halfway in melted chocolate of your choice.
    • Add gel food coloring- To make them different colors for specific holidays, events, or birthdays.
    • Make cookie sandwiches- Get to cookies and put the Best Cream Cheese Frosting, your favorite ice cream, Homemade Whipped Cream, or Strawberry Jam as a filling.
    • Instead of chocolate chips- Include whatever add-ins you like such as walnuts, pecans, almonds, raisins, dried cranberries. You can also replace just half the chocolate chips with chopped cashews or other nuts of your choice.
    • Peanut butter version- Use ¼ cup creamy peanut butter and only 2 tablespoon unsalted butter.
    • Oatmeal option- Add ¼ cup quick cooking oats in this recipe. This will yield chewy cookies similar to these Oatmeal Raisin Cookies.
    • Add coconut- Such as coconut flakes or toasted coconut flakes for a tropical flavor profile.
    • Add dried fruits- Like dried apricots, cranberries, or even pieced of dried banana.

How to make banana chocolate chip cookies?

It's very simple. Start off by creaming together butter and sugar. Add egg, vanilla, banana, flour, baking powder, cinnamon. Mix everything together until smooth. Then, stir in chocolate chips. Bake and enjoy!

Butter, granulated sugar, brown sugar, egg, banana and vanilla being mixed in a large bowl.

    1. Mix ingredients in large bowl- This includes butter, granulated sugar, brown sugar, egg, banana and vanilla.

Dry ingredients being added to the wet ingredients.

    2. Add in- Flour, baking powder and cinnamon powder.

Batter being mixed with a hand mixer.

    3. Mix- Until batter is just combined. Don't over-mix.

Chocolate chips being stirred into the batter.

    4. Stir in- Chocolate chips.

Spoonful of cookie dough on lined baking tray.

    5. Place- scoops of dough on baking tray.

    6. Bake- Until golden brown.

    Tips and techniques

    • Don't skip the step where you have to chill the dough- Since that prevents the cookies from spreading.
    • Make sure to use unsalted butter- Because your cookies can be too salty otherwise.
    • You must use really ripe bananas- To get the best results.
    • Don't skip cinnamon powder- Since it adds a wonderful "banana bread" flavor and aroma to these cookies just like my Banana Bread (Cake Mix).
    • Ingredients must all be at room temperature- Since they blend together more thoroughly.
    • Don't replace granulated sugar with brown sugar or vice versa- You must use both for the perfect texture.
    • Recipe can be doubled- To make a bigger batch for larger crowds.
    • Don't try to modify this recipe to make a vegan or gluten free version- I tried and it did not work out well at all.

    Recipe FAQs

Are these a low fat cookie?

No. But you can do some substitutions to make them a bit healthier. First, use coconut oil or coconut butter instead of butter. Second, use dark chocolate chips instead of milk or semisweet chocolate chips. And third, use a combination of whole wheat and all-purpose flour (½ cup all-purpose and ½ cup whole wheat).

    Why are my cookies hard?

This can happen when you over-bake them. Be sure to watch the time and always measure ingredients correctly. Baking is like chemistry and cannot be "eyeballed."

    Can I use green bananas?

No. This recipe is specifically meant for those ripe, brown bananas. Green bananas have a different flavor and texture with more starchiness. Just wait a few more days and you'll have some ready to go.

    Storage

    • Make ahead- These can be made up to 3 days ahead of serving if kept at room temperature. You can also keep them in the fridge for up to 5 days or freeze them in an airtight container for up to a month. Just thaw before serving.
    • Room temperature- Keep in a cookie jar for 2-3 days.
    • Refrigerate- Place in an airtight container for up to 5 days.
    • Freeze- Use a sealed container to keep them for up to 1 month. Thaw before serving.
