How to make shirt cupcakes?
- Bake cupcakes- Yellow cupcakes appeared to be the best classic choice.
- Let them cool- Until room temperature.
- Make buttercream icing- Color it, if you like.
- Make fondant toppers– Using simple tools like a shirt cutter and knife.
- Assemble- Pipe a swirl of frosting on top of cupcakes and place a fondant shirt on top of each one.
Variations for Dad cupcakes
Try different colors- Use your Dad's favorite colors.
Try other cupcake flavors– Such as Chocolate Chip Cupcakes or Mocha Cupcakes (Coffee Cupcakes).
Try other frosting flavors- Such as Seven Minute Frosting or Peanut Butter Frosting.
Fill cupcakes- With jams and preserves, Homemade Dulce De Leche or nut butters (peanut butter, almond butter, Nutella, Biscoff), candies and sprinkles or Homemade Caramel Sauce.
Tips and Techniques
Don’t frost or decorate warm cupcakes- Because the warmth will cause the icing and fondant to melt and make a sticky mess.
Homemade fondant vs. Marshmallow fondant- Either can be used. I prefer homemade fondant because it tastes really good.
Use gel coloring for fondant- Because it's thicker and more concentrated than liquid food coloring and does not make the fondant sticky. Instead of coloring white fondant, you can also buy pre-colored fondant. This will obviously save you time.
Make mini cupcakes- Follow the same instructions below to make mini fondant toppers.
Storage
Room temperature- Sore decorated cupcakes in a covered box for up to 2 days, as long as there is no perishable filling.
Refrigerate– Store leftovers in a covered box for 3 days but please note the fondant decorations will become sticky due to the moisture in the fridge.
Freeze– Decorated cupcakes cannot be frozen because when they thaw, the fondant decorations become sticky due to condensation. However, cupcakes and frosting can be stored separately in sealed containers in the freezer for up to 1 month. When you are ready to enjoy this treat, thaw in fridge overnight and follow instructions below.

Ingredients
- 24 Yellow cupcakes
- 4 cups Buttercream icing
- 2 cups Marshmallow fondant Yellow or blue or any color of your choice
Instructions
- Bake cupcakes and allow them to cool completely.
- While cupcakes and baking and cooling, make frosting.
- Pipe a swirl of frosting on top of each cupcake, using TIP 1M or use a spatula to spread icing on top.
- Roll out blue fondant and cut out a round piece with a circle cutter. Use a cutter that is the same width as your cupcakes.
- Use a pizza cutter to cut out two thin strips. These will become the collar and button line of your shirt cupcakes.
- Use a paintbrush to brush some water around the top of the circular piece.
- Stick one of the strips. You can stuff some tissue in the center of the collar so that it holds its shape.
- Now, use a knife to cut off the ends of the other strip so that it becomes pointy.
- Brush some water along the center of the shirt.
- Stick the pointy strip here. Cut off excess at the bottom with a knife.
- Cut out a small rectangular piece and use the knife to make a light indentation on the top. This will become the pocket of the shirt.
- Brush some water near the side of the shirt and stick the pocket piece here.
- Finally, roll out three tiny yellow fondant balls and press them onto the button line.
- Also, roll out a very thin yellow strip and press it along the top of the pocket.Tip: You can draw the buttons and draw that pocket line with edible markers, if you like.
- Place these fondant shirt pieces on top of each frosted cupcake. Enjoy!
Notes
- Read all my tips above.
- Leftovers can be stored in a sealed container in the fridge for up to 3 days but the fondant decorations will become slightly sticky.
