How to make easy gold cake? How can I make my cake gold?

    1. Spray- Using edible spray bottles, such as the Wilton’s color mist or you can use an airbrush machine. The latter works really well, but is a more expensive option.
    2. Paint- Mix gold edible powder or luster dust with either vodka or clear extract. Then paint that over a fondant- covered cake. Keep in mind that this technique cannot be done on a buttercream covered cake, because it just gets clumpy and mixed in, which doesn't give the look you want.
    3. Sprinkles- Cover the cake with golden sprinkles. There are various options that you can find at your local grocery store or online.
    4. Edible gold leaf- You can purchase edible gold sheets, which are a bit pricey. Just be aware that these are very thin and delicate which makes it a bit tricky to use. It takes practice, but this will give you the most realistic shiny gold option. This is best done on a fondant covered cake.
    5. Sanding sugar- This is something that you can make at home or buy. This option is a better option for covering a buttercream frosted cake. This would not work well on a fondant covered cake because the sugar won’t stick to fondant as well.

    Gold drip cake

    1. Mix- Together 1 teaspoon gold lustre dust with 1 teaspoon clear extract until dissolved.
    2. Add- About ½-1 tablespoon powdered sugar to thicken the paste to your perfect “dripping” desired consistency.
    3. Drop- Spoonfuls gently along the top edges of the cake to create a drip design.

    Rose gold cake

This uses the same concept as stated above, but instead you use rose gold ingredients including sprinkles, lustre dust, spray, and more.

    Variations for shiny gold cake

Try a different cake flavor- Use vanilla, red velvet, Funfetti, or another cake favorite flavor to change up the look, texture, and taste of the cake.

Pair with a different icing- Switch things up and try other frostings, such as Sugar Free Frosting, Marshmallow Frosting, Cooked Flour Buttercream, or White Chocolate Buttercream.

Decorate with other sweets halwas or even candies- For various looks and then spray them gold for the right color combinations.

Omit the coconut- And just spray the frosted cake. If you are doing this, cake must be frosted smoothly for a clean and crisp appearance.

Cover the cake in golden sprinkles- This is a simple way to cover the entire cake and save you the trouble of spraying so much.

Make a bigger cake- This was a very small cake, but you can double it and use a larger cake pan.

Make a tiered cake- This would be great for weddings, larger gatherings, and big parties. Be sure to make double the batter and use cake pans of varying size.

Decorate with fudge- If you are not fond of halwa. You can cut it out in any shape you like or simply use cookie cutters.

Tips and techniques for metallic cake

Don't decorate a warm cake- Because the frosting and decorations will get warm, slide off, and be ruined.

Plan ahead- Bake a day in advance and save time on the day of decorating. That way the work is split up over a few days instead of it being a marathon affair.

If you have never used edible sprays- I did a post about using cake stencils and edible sprays that you should check out that can be helpful.

Allow the spray to dry- Before touching the halwa pieces or the cake, otherwise you will ruin the golden sheen and smooth look.

Use white, ivory or pale yellow icing- Because it will allow the gold color to shine through perfectly. I used some leftover light blue icing and it was not the best choice.

A note on halva- I topped off the cake with Indian halva called "Kaju Katli" that was shaped like diamonds. If you haven't worked with halva before or don't know where to find it, it can easily be found at Indian bakeries. Halva is soft, sweet, and made with cashew paste. It is often compared to a fudge-like consistency with a nutty taste.

    Storage of golden birthday cake

Make a head- You can make the cake in advance and place in the fridge or at room temperature for up to 1 day. When ready, frost cake as usual and decorate.

Fridge- Leftovers can be stored in a sealed container in the fridge for up to 3 days.

Freezer- I wouldn't recommend freezing this cake, because the halva will change texture upon thawing and become crumbly. However, you can freeze the frosting and cake only (minus the halva filling) for up to 1 month.

    Ingredients

    Cake

    • 2 Chocolate cakes This was a small cake. I made two 4x2 inch cakes and leftover batter was used to make cupcakes

    Halva filling

    • 10 pieces Halva I used "kaju katli" pieces that I got from an Indian bakery
    • ½ cup Heavy cream

    Icing

    • 2 cups Buttercream icing

    Decoration

    • 1 cup Desiccated coconut
    • Golden edible spray I used Wilton's gold color mist
    • 10-15 Halva pieces
    • 1 tablespoon Silver edible pearls

    Instructions

    • Bake cakes and allow them to cool completely.
    • Prepare the filling by adding the halva pieces in a deep bowl. Mash them with the back of a fork or use a hand-held mixer.
    • Add heavy cream until you have a thick and smooth consistency.
Note: Keep in mind that all bakeries have different recipes for their halvas. Some are soft and some are firmer. So, you may need to add more or less heavy cream to get the desired consistency (something similar to thick jam).
    • Prepare buttercream icing.
    • Place one cake on a serving dish or cake stand.
    • Spread halva filling on top of cake evenly.
    • Place other cake on top and press gently to secure together.
    • Ice entire cake smoothly in icing.
    • Cover entire cake in desiccated coconut.
    • Spray the entire cake with golden edible spray.
    • Place your halva pieces on a sheet of paper towel. Spray it golden with gold edible spray.
    • Keep these aside at room temperature until the paint dries. This takes about 10 minutes.
    • Place your halva pieces on top of the cake in a flower formation.
    • Give your whole cake one final coating of that golden spray and let it dry. This takes about 5-10 minutes.
    • Add a silver pearl in the center of the flower and toss a few more randomly around the base of the cake. Enjoy!

    Notes

    • Read all my tips above.
    • Since I was feeling a little lazy, I used my leftover light blue buttercream icing from a previous project and sprayed it golden. Honestly, I don't recommend it. To get the perfect golden color, use either white, ivory or pale yellow colored icing.
    • Leftovers can be stored in a sealed container in the fridge for up to 3 days.
