These adorable cupcakes are sure to brighten your day. You don't need any fancy cutters or tools to make these toppers and the tutorial is also simple enough for beginners who have never decorated cakes/ cupcakes. You can even use them on this Bumblebee Cake (Spring Cake).

    How to make bee cupcakes?

    1. Bake cupcakes- And allow them to cool completely.
    2. Make buttercream icing- Color it green.
    3. Make fondant bees- You will need about 2 per treat.
    4. Assemble- Pipe green grass on top of cupcakes and stick a few bees and flower candies.

    Variations for bumblebee cupcakes

Make mini cupcakes- Use mini cupcake liners. The baking time will be shorter. Also, the fondant bee toppers will have to be smaller.

Fill cupcakes- With Easy Homemade Strawberry Jam or Lemon Curd.

Try another cupcake flavor- Such as these Rainbow Cupcakes (With Cake Mix). They are fun and colorful.

Consider a different frosting- Such as this Easy Mint Frosting.

Use a different decorating tip instead of grass tip- Pipe a swirl of green frosting using Tip 1M and then, stick the decorations.

Tips and Techniques for Spring cupcakes

Homemade marshmallow fondant vs. Store-bought fondant- Either can be used. Both have their pros and cons. Homemade fondant tastes really good and also smells amazing. Store-bought fondant, however, is quick and convenient and also comes pre-colored, which means less work for you.

Gum paste vs. Fondant- Either can be used. You can also use a 50/50 combination (half gum paste and half fondant). Gum paste dries hard very quickly and fondant takes longer.

Cupcakes must cool completely before decorating- Because the heat will melt the icing and fondant decorations, leading to a sticky mess.

Use gel colors– They are vibrant and more concentrated than normal liquid food colors and thus, the consistency of icing and fondant does not change.

Another idea- 2D Rather than 3D

This is another option that you can try. It's even easier than the 3D version I just showed you. Both look beautiful and it's up to you as to which version you feel like making.

    1. Roll out yellow fondant and use the big and small circle cutters to cut out circular pieces.
    2. Stick the small piece on top of the big one.
    3. Roll out black fondant and use a pizza cutter to cut out a few thin strips and bend them a little so that they become curved.
    4. Stick these strips on the big circle with water. Cut off excess along the ends with a knife.
    5. Use a knife to cut out a small triangular black piece for the bumblebee’s stinger and stick that at the end of the big circle.
    6. Make antennas by cutting 2 small strips of black fondant and 2 tiny circles. I used tip #12 to make these circles. Stick theM behind the small circle with corn syrup.
    7. Use black edible marker to draw out eyes and a mouth.
    8. Finally, stick 2 little white heart fondant pieces near the top for the wings.
    9. Let these bumblebee cupcake toppers dry for an hour or two and then, place them on your frosted cupcakes.

    Storage

Room temperature- Store decorated cupcakes in a covered box for up to 2 days. They should not be in a sealed container because that will cause the fondant decorations to become sticky.

Refrigerate- This is not recommended since the moisture from the fridge can make the fondant decorations sticky. However, you can store iced cupcakes in a covered box in the fridge. Stick the fondant bees on top before serving.

Freeze– Decorated cupcakes cannot be frozen because when they thaw, the fondant decorations become sticky due to condensation.

    Ingredients

    • 12 Brownie cupcakes
    • 2 cups American buttercream frosting Colored green
    • 1 cup Marshmallow fondant White, yellow and black
    • ¼ cup Flower candies

    Instructions

    • Bake cupcakes and allow them to cool completely.
    • While cupcakes are baking and cooling, prepare green frosting.
    • Use grass tip (Wilton Tip # 233) to pipe green grass on top of cupcakes. Keep aside.
    • Roll out yellow fondant into somewhat of a cylinder shape. This will be the main body of the bee.
    • Use black fondant to roll out thin long ropes. These will be the stripes. Stick these on the bee's body with a bit of water. You can also just use a black edible marker to draw black lines.
    • Roll out a small ball of black fondant and shape it into a cone. This will be the bee’s stinger. Brush some water at the back of the yellow body and stick it there. Hold it in place for a few seconds so that it does not fall off and sticks securely.
    • Draw eyes with a black edible marker. Draw lips with red edible marker.
    • For the wings, roll out two balls of white fondant and using your fingers, flatten them into a petal shape. Brush some water on both sides of the bee’s body. Place your wings on the water marks.
    • If you do not want your bee to have antennas, you can stop here and you are done. If you want those, keep going for one last addition to your bee.
    • For the antenna, break a toothpick into two small pieces. Color them with black edible marker and insert them on the bee’s head. For the final touch, roll out two small black balls of fondant. Push them on top of the toothpicks and you are done.
    • Make as many bees as you need.
    • Place them on top of the frosted cupcakes, along with some flower candies. Enjoy!
