Using cake mix boxes to make delicious desserts is so much fun and super easy as well. Today's recipe is just as fantastic as my Chocolate Cherry Dump Cake (Cake Mix) as well as this Peach Dump Cake (Cake Mix) and of course my Blueberry Dump Cake (Cake Mix). All of these cakes have a cobbler-like texture with an ooey gooey filling that's topped with a crumbly mixture.

Key ingredients
- Apple pie filling- You will need 2 large cans for this recipe.
- Cake mix- I like to us spice cake mix and you use the whole box.
- Butter- Be sure it is unsalted and melted, not cold.
Variations
- Mix in some chopped nuts- Like pecans, almonds, cashews, or peanuts in the cake mix powder.
- Crockpot version- First, grease the inside of the pot, then pour in the pie filling. In a separate container, mix together butter and cake mix and spread it in the pan over the first layer. Cover and cook on High for 2 hours or Low for 4 hours.
- Add in shredded coconut- This brings in added texture and flavor.
- Put in some mini chocolate chips- If you are a chocolate fan. Add more or less based on your personal preference.
- Use different flavors of cake mix- Including chocolate or vanilla. I suggest adding in some nutmeg and cinnamon if you use vanilla.
- Try other fruit fillings- Such as peach, blueberry, or a mixed berry.
How to make easy apple dump cake recipe with cake mix?
- Lay out pie filling- Evenly at the bottom of the pan.
- Dump dry cake mix- Over the top of the filling.
- Spread mix evenly- Over entire surface using a spatula.
- Pour melted butter- Over the dry cake mix.
- Tilt the pan side to side- This will allow the butter to spread out on top of the cake mix.
- Bake and enjoy- Warm with whipped cream or ice cream on top.
Tips and techniques
- Topping options to add prior to serving- Drizzle of Caramel Sauce or Dulce de Leche. You can even top with Caramel Frosting or Sour Cream Frosting (Vanilla) or Powdered Sugar Glaze (Vanilla Cake Glaze). A simple option would be vanilla ice cream or even frozen yogurt.
- Using melted butter vs. cold butter slices or cubes- I prefer melted because it spreads better and more evenly. Cubed butter tends to leave large pockets of dry cake mix behind after baking.
- Use unsalted butter- So that your dessert doesn't become too salty.
- Cake mix brand options- I have tried many different brands and they all turned out well, so choose your favorite.
- Fresh vs. canned apple filling- I personally like the canned version because it is quicker and easier. Besides, using fresh fruit will require a separate recipe.
- Don't mix together- You may be tempted to mix the ingredients, but it is meant to stay in layers. Trust the process.
- Be sure to spray the pan- So that the filling and cake don't stick to the bottom, making cleanup more difficult.
- It's okay to have dry pockets of cake mix- Because in the end it will all mix together. Don't stress about getting the butter on every square inch.
Storage
- Room temperature- I don't recommend letting this sit out more than 2-3 hours, especially if you have already put whipped cream on top.
- Refrigerate- Place in a sealed container for up to 3 days.
- Freeze- Place in a sealed container for up to 1 month. Thaw and reheat in the microwave. It is best served fresh, however.
- Make ahead- This can be made up to 3 days in advance if kept in a sealed container in the fridge. Warm up before serving, if desired.
Recipe FAQs
It is a dessert similar to a cobbler. It gets its name because you simply "dump" all the ingredients in a pan without mixing everything together.
Yes. Although the caky portion shouldn't still taste like batter, this dessert will be gooey from the fruit and filling. It's part of what makes it tasty. You don't want it too dry, burnt, and crumbling.
The caky layer on top should be a golden brown and no longer doughy and the filling should be bubbly.

Ingredients
- 2 cans Apple pie filling 21 oz. can each
- 1 box Spice cake mix 15.25 oz. box
- ¾ cup Butter Unsalted, Melted
Instructions
- Spray a a rectangular cake pan (Dimensions: 9x13) with oil.
- Spread apple pie filling evenly in the pan.
- Sprinkle dry cake mix evenly on top of the pie filling.
- Pour melted butter as evenly as you can on top of the dry cake mix. Tilt the pan gently from side to side to spread out butter as evenly as possible. There will be some small portions of dry cake mix visible but that's okay.
- Bake at 350 degrees F for 45-50 minutes until the top is cooked through and firm and golden brown. There might be little bits of dry cake mix on top and that's okay. When you spoon it in a plate later with that gooey filling, the dry cake mix will combine with the rest of the ingredients.
- Serve warm with whipped cream and enjoy!
