The countdown to the New Year is officially on. Only a few more days left as we enter January. Instead of writing my resolutions on paper, I wrote them on cookies which was a lot of fun. If you are planning a party, be sure to include today's recipe. However, if you want to celebrate with champagne, then I highly recommend making this Easy Pink Champagne Cake or these Champagne Cookies or even these Champagne Truffles.
Table of contents
Key ingredients
- Oreos- I like to use golden Oreos but you can use the classic flavor too.
- Fondant- This can be any color you like. It can also be homemade or store-bought.
- Corn syrup- This allows you to stick the fondant on top of the cookie and works like "edible glue."
How to make easy decorated Happy New Years Cookies recipe?
- Roll out fondant- Use a cookie cutter to cut out circle pieces (Image 1).
- Stick fondant on top of cookie- By using some corn syrup (Image 2).
- Let the fondant-covered cookies dry a bit- This should take 10-15 minutes.
- Write on fondant- With edible markers (Image 3).
Variations
- Make gold Oreos- This is another cool idea. Gold and black is the most popular color combination for New Year's parties. Instead of decorating with fondant, just use a gold edible spray and spray each cookie until fully covered and shiny. You can also spread a thin layer of American Buttercream Icing on top of each cookie and cover in golden sprinkles.
- Use sugar cookies- Instead of Oreos, bake a batch of Cut Out Sugar Cookies (With Cake Mix) or Small Batch of Sugar Cookies or even these Chocolate Sugar Cookies and decorate them, as per instructions below.
- Use cookie icing instead of edible markers- If you have a steady hand, you can use Royal Icing or Glace Icing to write/pipe the resolutions on top of each cookie. Both of these icings dry hard.
- Decorate with sugar champagne flutes/ glass- These are pre-made and edible and can be "glued" on top of the cookies with some buttercream or royal icing. You can find them online or in the seasonal aisle or baking aisle of most grocery stores.
- Make spritz cookies- These are made with a cookie press and you can use one of the seasonal New Year's eve metal discs to create a relevant design. Try this recipe for Best Spritz Cookies (Almond Butter Press Cookies) or these Chocolate Spritz Cookies but before baking, toss some golden sprinkles, gold sanding sugar or gold edible pearls.
- Use other cream filled cookies- I used golden Oreos but you can use generic brands or even Nutter Butter cookies.
- Make countdown cookies- Instead of writing resolutions, write numbers from 1 to 10 and enjoy munching on them as you are counting down to midnight.
Tips and techniques
- Allow the fondant to dry a little- Because this makes it firmer and it's easier to write on them.
- Use a fine tip marker- This allows you to write in very fine print and looks neat and tidy.
- Don't refrigerate these decorated cookies- Because fondant becomes sticky when exposed to moisture and the cookies become soggy and the marker ink will start to bleed as well.
- Store-bought vs. Homemade fondant- Homemade version obviously tastes better but if you are short on time, just use pre-colored fondant from the stores. It will save you a lot of time and is very convenient.
- Circle cutter should be about the same size as your cookie- If the cutter is too big, your fondant cut outs will be too big and extend out too much and look hideous. If the cutter is too small, the fondant cut out will also be too small and not fully cover the cookie.
- Don't use a lot of corn syrup- A small amount goes a long way. You just need to spread a thin layer so that the fondant sticks to the cookie. If you add too much, it will ooze out from the sides and make a sticky mess.
Recipe FAQs
This really depends on the design that you want to make. Cookies can be decorated with fondant, royal icing, glace icing, sprinkles and even buttercream icing. Intricate patterns are usually piped and require a steady hand and lots of practice.
This depends on the icing that is used. For cookies that are decorated with fondant or royal icing, they should be stored in a covered box at room temperature away from direct heat and moisture. For cookies decorated with buttercream icing, they should be refrigerated in a sealed container for up to 3 days.
Storage
- Make ahead- These can be made 1-2 days in advance and stored in a covered cardboard box at room temperature, away from direct heat and moisture.
- Refrigerate- This is not recommended since the Oreos can become soggy from the moisture in the fridge and the fondant can become sticky.
- Room temperature- Store in a covered cardboard box away from direct heat and moisture.
- Freeze- This is not recommended because the Oreos will become soggy upon thawing and the fondant decorations will become sticky.

Ingredients
- 1 cup Marshmallow fondant In various colors of your choice.
- 12 Gold Oreos Or any other cream filled cookies of your choice.
- 2 tablespoon Corn syrup Can also use buttercream icing or jam
Instructions
- Roll out fondant.
- Use a round cookie cutter (about the same size as your cookies) to cut out circles of fondant in various colors.
- Brush some corn syrup on top of the cookies and stick the fondant circles.
- Let the fondant-covered cookies sit out for 10-15 minutes at room temperature, uncovered and away from splashes of water. This will allow the fondant to dry a little and make it easier to write on them.
- Use a black edible marker to write your resolutions on top of each cookie.
- Place these cookies in a cookie jar. Wrap a ribbon around it with a cute tag that says: "This year, I will..."
Notes
- Edible markers can be found online or in the cake decorating aisle of Hobby Lobby, Michaels or Walmart.
- Allow the fondant to dry a little before you start writing on them. If the fondant is too soft, the marker tip will start indenting the fondant and make a mess, as you write.
- Use a fine tip marker for the cleanest sharpest writing.
- If you are short on time, use store-bought colored fondant.
