How To Make Old Fashioned Sweet Potato Pie Recipe?
- Mix ingredients in a bowl- This includes mashed sweet potatoes, butter, condensed milk, eggs, cinnamon powder, nutmeg powder, orange zest (optional), vanilla extract.
- Pour potato mixture in a pie dish shell- It should be unbaked and deep dish.
- Bake- Until the filling has set and crust is golden brown.
- Enjoy- Remove from oven and let it cool completely.
What To Serve With Sweet Potato Pie?
It's best served with a scoop of vanilla ice cream on top or fresh Homemade Whipped Cream! You can also top it with melted white chocolate or white chocolate ganache or Homemade Caramel Sauce.
Storage
Refrigerate- In a sealed container in the fridge for up to 3 days.
Freeze- I don't recommend freezing it because the crust will become soggy when it's thawed.
Reheat- It can be eaten cold or reheated in the microwave.
Variations
Crustless sweet potato pie- Simply omit the crust and bake until the filling sets.
Purple sweet potato pie- Use purple sweet potatoes in place of orange ones for a visual surprise!
Mini pies- Cut out small circular crusts using a biscuit or cookie cutter on the pie crust. Place them in a cupcake tin or mini pie dish. Then, fill with sweet potato filling. Baking time will vary based on size, so watch till the filling is set and crust is lightly browned.
Add marshmallow topping- After the pie is baked, cover the top in miniature marshmallows and broil for 1-2 minutes. Keep a close eye the whole time so that the crust and marshmallows do not burn.
Add crumble topping- Make the crumble topping from this Easy Apple Crumble Pie, and bake the pie with it spread evenly on top.
Add bourbon- This warm flavor will compliment the sweet potatoes nicely.
Add candied pecan topping- Add candied pecans or Candied Nuts for added texture and flavor.
Use salted browned butter- This adds more depth of flavor.
Tips And Techniques
How do you know when potato pie is done? When the center of the pie is set and the crust is lightly browned, the pie is done. You can insert a knife and if it comes out moist, and mostly clean, it is finished.
Why is my pie soggy? Why is my pie filling runny? How to fix runny pie? It has too much liquid in it, or it hasn't been baked long enough. If it has too much liquid in it before baking, mix in a small amount of flour. If it is runny while baking, continue baking for a little longer until the center of the pie is set.
How to make mashed sweet potatoes?- You can make them many ways! You can microwave poked sweet potatoes, till fork tender. You can bake them whole, once again poking holes to release the steam. With either of these methods, simply scoop out the flesh when they are done cooking, and mash with a fork or potato masher. You can also boil the peeled and cubed potatoes till fork tender as yet another option.
You cannot replace condensed milk with evaporated milk or regular milk- They are all very different! Condensed milk provided the best flavor with the correct amount of sweetness, and that is why I recommend it for this recipe.
Mashed sweet potatoes vs. Pumpkin puree- Pumpkin tends to be a lighter and nuttier flavor, and sweet potatoes are a little sweeter with a heavier flavor. They produce two different flavors, but will have a very similar texture overall.
Why is my pie cracked? This means the pie is over-baked. Make sure to keep an eye on the pie during baking to prevent this from happening.
What size pie shell to use? I recommend a 9 inch pie shell. You can use an 8 inch pie shell. Just don't fill it all the way to the top. You will end up with some leftover batter and that can be used to make mini pies, if you like.
How to keep the crust from over- browning? You can protect them by using a a pie crust shield. You can also cover the edges of the pie with aluminum foil, halfway through baking.
Cool the pie completely- Or else you will not get clean slices when you cut into it.

Have been making sweet potato pies and have always used evaporated milk. As did my mother and grandmother. Condensed milk , I think would be too sweet.

For this recipe, you need to use condensed milk because no other sugar is added. In many other versions that I have seen, evaporated milk is used along with some sugar. I think it just depends on the recipe.

This recipe was perfection! I love that you used condensed milk ... it saves a step not having to measure out sugar and dirty another dish

OMG, not only was this a very easy uncomplicated recipe, it is the best, sweet potato pie I have had in recent memory. I did not choose to use the orange zest and I was out of nutmeg. But it turned out beautifully; I covered the outside rim of the pie plate, halfway through cooking to keep the crust from over browning.
Rochelle
I love it! I usually freeze any extra pie mixture for a future pie.
