What to serve with chocolate fruit dip recipe?
Fruits– Such as strawberries, apples, grapes, pineapples, cantaloupe, honey dew, bananas, blackberries, raspberries, oranges. Make sure there are little toothpicks nearby that people can use for picking up fruit and dunking. It’s less messy this way plus more hygienic. You can even use chocolate covered fruits like these Chocolate Covered Blueberries or these Chocolate Covered Cherries.
Cookies– Such as chocolate and vanilla wafers, Oreos, Chocolate Chip Cookies, Chocolate Chunk Cookies, graham crackers, Cut Out Sugar Cookies or Soft and Chewy Sugar Cookies, pretzels, Easy Peanut Butter Cookies, and Best Shortbread Cookies (3 Ingredients). They can be homemade or store-bought. If you are a chocoholic, serve them with these Chocolate Covered Pretzels.
Chocolate– This includes Hershey’s chocolate bars, Mars, Twix, Kit Kat, Milky Way, Snickers e.t.c. Use chocolate in the bar shape because they are sturdy and easy to hold and eat. Mini candy bars work best.
Variations
Add garnishes- Such as sprinkles, mini M&Ms, mint leaves, Reese's Pieces, mini chocolate chips, shredded chocolate or chocolate curls.
Chocolate chip dip- Make it chunky by mixing in some mini chocolate chips or roughly chopped chocolate.
Chocolate chip cookie dough dip- Make small balls of Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Truffles (Eggless) and gently stir them into the prepared dip.
Make it healthier- Replace some of the cream cheese with full fat Greek yogurt. Also, use low fat whipped cream and low fat cream cheese.
Add flavors and extracts– Such vanilla, maple, mint, coconut, peppermint, caramel, almond extracts or citrus zests (lemon, lime or orange). For a spiced version flavored by cinnamon, nutmeg, pumpkin pie spice, try this Pumpkin Dip instead.
White chocolate fruit dip- Use white chocolate chips instead of semisweet chocolate chips for a much sweeter version.
Use dark chocolate- Use dark chocolate chips for a richer, deeper flavor or use a combination of semisweet and dark, if you don't want it to be too bitter.
Add peanut butter- Mix in some smooth some peanut butter or any nut butter of your choice.
Give it a Mexican chocolate flavor- Use Mexican chocolate and also add some cinnamon and cayenne pepper for a sweet and spicy flavor.
S'mores dip- Add a generous amount of mini marshmallows and roughly chopped graham crackers as a topping, prior to serving.
Add Nutella- Mix in some Nutella for an added hazelnut flavor.
Try a different cheese- Replace cream cheese with mascarpone cheese or use a combination of both.
Tips and techniques
Cocoa powder vs. Hot cocoa mix powder- They are not the same and cannot be used interchangeably. Cocoa powder is unsweetened, which is what's used in this recipe. Hot cocoa mix has sugar and other added ingredients that are not required in this dip.
Use full fat ingredients- Because this is crucial to the rich and creamy texture. No low fat or fat-free ingredients please!
Use softened cream cheese- Because it blends together more smoothly and evenly without any lumps.
Why does my dip feel gritty? Why is my dip lumpy? The ingredients have not mixed together evenly or the chocolate may have burned a little, during melting.
Cool Whip vs. Homemade whipped cream- Either can be used successfully. Cool Whip is just readily available and convenient.
How to make dip thicker? Mix in some powdered sugar and cocoa powder. It also thickens a bit as it chills in the fridge.
How to make dip thinner? Mix in some milk or heavy cream.
Make a bigger batch- By doubling or even tripling all the ingredients. This would be great for a big birthday party.
What to do with leftover dip? Enjoy it as a delicious topping on Easy Crepes, Chocolate Waffles (With Cake Mix) or Chocolate Chip Pancakes or just eat it by the spoonfuls. If it's thick enough, you can also use it as a filling in cakes and cupcakes.
How to melt chocolate chips? You can use a double boiler on stovetop or use a microwave. Regardless of which method you use, be sure to keep a close eye on the chocolate to prevent it from burning and stir often to evenly distribute the heat.
Let the melted chocolate cool- If it's too hot, it will melt the other ingredients and make the dip very thin. It should be slightly warm.
Storage
How long can fruit dip last? Leftovers can be stored in the fridge in a sealed container for up to 3 days.
Can this dip be frozen? No, it cannot be frozen because dairy breaks down as it thaws and makes a watery mess.
How far in advance can you make the dip? It can be made 1 day in advance and stored in the fridge.
