The best, classic, old fashioned, quick and easy chocolate crinkle cookies recipe, homemade with simple ingredients. Rich, soft, fudgy and puffy. Starts off with a chocolate cake mix.

Classic cookies such as these Red Velvet Crinkle Cookies or these Snickerdoodles Cookies or even these Easy Peanut Butter Blossoms are very popular during the Christmas holidays.

Today's chocolate crinkles are great for cookie exchanges, bake sales and make a lovely homemade gift too. They are better than any recipe I have made from scratch.

How to make chocolate crinkle cookies (chocolate crinkles)?

    1. Mix together wet ingredients- Mix together eggs and oil.
    2. Add dry ingredients- Mix in cake mix and baking powder.
    3. Chill- Just 15-20 minutes in the fridge is enough to make the dough less sticky and easier to work with.
    4. Make cookie balls- Scoop out small portions of the dough and roll small balls.
    5. Coat in sugar- Use powdered sugar.
    6. Bake- The best temperature is 350 degrees F for 8-10 minutes.
    7. Enjoy- Allow the cookies to cool down and then, dig in!

Can chocolate crinkle cookie recipe be frozen?

Baked cookies cannot be frozen because when they thaw, the powdered sugar coating will become a sticky mess and they would lose their beautiful crinkly appearance.

However, you can freeze cookie dough balls in a sealed container for up to 1 month. Make sure NOT to roll the cookie balls in powdered sugar though. Roll them in powdered sugar, just prior to baking. You will need to bake for a few more minutes since the dough was frozen.

    Variations

    • Lemon crinkle cookies- Make these Easy Lemon Cookies but roll them in powdered sugar instead of granulated sugar.
    • Make cookie sandwiches
    • Dip them in melted chocolate- After the cookies have cooled down completely, dip them halfway in melted chocolate (white, dark or milk). Then, toss some colorful sprinkles before the chocolate sets.
    • Add chocolate chips- Toss ½ cup mini chocolate chips in the batter to turn these into double chocolate cookie.s
    • Add spices- Such as some ginger, cinnamon powder, nutmeg powder or cardamom powder and a little cayenne pepper to create a sweet and spicy flavor combination.
    • Christmas crinkle cookies- Add a little pepper mint extract in the dough and also dip each cookie in melted chocolate and sprinkle some crunched peppermint candies on top.

    Tips and Techniques

    • Don’t over-mix the cookie dough– Because that yields very tough cookies. Mix until just combined, even if there are a few lumps.
    • All ingredients must be at room temperature– That’s because they blend together smoothly and evenly.
    • Chill cookie dough– Do not skip this step because it makes it easier to handle dough and form balls. Additionally, it also prevents cookies from spreading too much during baking.
    • What cake mix flavor to use? For maximum chocolate flavor, use Devil’s food cake mix or chocolate cake mix. However, you can swap out the chocolate cake mix with any cake mix flavor you like to make any flavor of crinkle cookies you like.
    • What brand of cake mix to use? I have successfully used Pillsbury, Betty Crocker and Duncan Hones without any problems.
    • Don't over-bake these cookies- Because that will make them hard. You want them to remain soft and fudgy. So, remove them from the oven when edges are firm but centers are slightly soft. However, some people like to under-bake them to give them an ooey gooey "brownie-like" texture.
    • Can I use butter instead of oil? Absolutely! Just make sure to use unsalted butter.
    • Roll in powdered sugar- If you use granulated sugar, they will become crunchy on the outside and they won't have the same white crinkly appearance that you get with powdered sugar.

It made them rise bigger like I wanted. You can't taste it at the end.

Hi, I’m not sure but I made the chocolate crinkle cookies, and they are not chewy is that normal?  Otherwise I like them like all your recipes. 5 stars

Hi Barb...Did you maybe over-bake them? If they are not chewy, that usually means they were baked for too long. Next time, remove your tray 2-3 mins earlier than indicated in the recipe card.
