I am sure you have seen these before. They are quite popular around this time of the year. They are pretty cute and something fun to make with your kids or grandkids while the turkey is baking. Most of the versions I have seen have a pretzel stem but I didn't have any pretzels in the house. I had to come up with Plan B and decided to go through my son's Halloween candy stash and used his Tootsie rolls instead. I am sure he didn't mind. Make a cookie platter and include today's cookies plus these Easy Fall Cookies (Leaf Cookies) and these Easy Oreo Turkey Cookies and they are going to be such a hit. Enjoy making them and eating them with the whole family!

Key ingredients
- Pretzels- You will need to use mini pretzel rods but if you don't have those, tootsie rolls also work well.
- Nutter Butter cookies- Be sure to buy the regular sized ones rather than the mini ones.
- Melted chocolate- This will work like "edible glue" to stick all the pieces together.
- Chocolate sprinkles- I like to use long jimmies but you can use other types of brown sprinkles too.

How to make easy acorn cookies with Nutter Butter?

1. Break Nutter Butter cookie- In half.

2. Add stem- By pouring melted chocolate on the creamy cookie side and sticking a mini pretzel rod.

3. Pour melted chocolate- On top of the non-creamy cookie side.

4. Cover- In chocolate sprinkles.

5. Pour melted chocolate- On top of the pretzel.

6. Stick sprinkle covered cookie- On top of the melted chocolate and press to hold together.
Variations
- Try other store-bought cookies- Like Oreos or Milanos. You may have to cut them with a sharp knife on the top for the perfect acorn shape.
- Bake cut out cookies- Use an acorn cutter and these Easy Gingersnap Cookies {Cut Out}. I think the color of them would be so perfectly Fall! You can also use these Easy Cut Out Sugar Cookies {With Cake Mix}, Pistachio Cookies {Cut Out}, or these Easy Chocolate Sugar Cookies {Cut Out}.
- Use peanut butter- To adhere the chocolate sprinkles to the cookie if you prefer a peanut butter explosion as opposed to a chocolate addition. Note that the peanut butter will not "dry and harden" like the chocolate does. You can perhaps consider using melted peanut butter chips.
- Use other sprinkles- Use whatever you have on hand that is Fall color themed. They can be as whimsical as you would like them. You can also use my Homemade Sprinkles if you want to make them yourself. This is another fun project to do with your kids.
- Use tootsie rolls- In place of the pretzel rods for the stem.
- Add chopped nuts- Use chopped peanuts in place of sprinkles to add even more rustic texture.
- Add crushed pretzels- In place of sprinkles on the tops of these cookies.
- You can even use them to decorate your Thanksgiving pies- Top them off on this Easy Pumpkin Pie (5 Ingredients) or even this Easy Sweet Potato Pie. It will elevate them in just a few minutes!
- For twisted stems- Use pretzel twists instead of rods and just break them to the correct size.

Tips and techniques for Fall cookies
- What kind of chocolate to use? I used semi-sweet chocolate chips, but you can use dark chocolate or milk chocolate. You can even use almond bark, or candy melts if that is easier.
- How to melt chocolate? Follow package directions. If there are none, you can melt it in a microwave safe bowl for 30 seconds at a time, stirring between each heating. Another option is to use a double broiler. I prefer the microwave because it saves time and dishes.
- Make a bigger batch- Simply double the ingredients and make 40 cookies instead of 20.
Acorn cupcakes
Use these cookies as cupcake toppers. This is such a fun and quick cupcake decorating idea, especially for Thanksgiving parties. In this picture below, I used them as a topper on my Easy Pumpkin Cupcakes (With Spiced Cream Cheese Frosting).

Another idea- Acorn donut holes
I used this recipe for my Easy Baked Pumpkin Donuts (With Cake Mix) to make small donut holes. Once they cool to room temperature, dip the tops in melted chocolate first and then dip them in a bowl of sprinkles to cover the tops completely. Break a mini pretzel rod in half and push one into the top of each donut hole. Let the chocolate set and you are done. These can be enjoyed on their own as dessert or you can use them as a topper for cakes, cupcakes and even pies. These would look lovely on my Tiered Rustic Cake.

Storage
- Room Temperature- In a cookie jar for up to 3 days.
- Freeze- I don't recommend this because the cookies become soggy upon thawing.
- Refrigerate- I don't recommend this either because the cookies can become soggy from the moisture in the refrigerator.

Ingredients
- 10 Nutter butter cookies
- ½ cup Melted chocolate
- ½ cup Chocolate sprinkles I like to use long jimmies
- ¼ cup Mini pretzel rods You can also use chocolate tootsie rolls
Instructions
- Break the cookie in half.
- Divide the cookie further into creamy side and non-creamy side.
- Pour some melted chocolate on top of the creamy side.
- Break a pretzel rod in half and stick one piece on top of the melted chocolate. This will be the stem. You can also use a knife to cut little sausage shapes out of chocolate Tootsie Rolls and use that for the stem instead of the pretzel sticks.
- Pour some melted chocolate on only the top portion of the non-creamy side of the cookie.
- Dip this area in a bowl of chocolate sprinkles.
- Pour some more melted chocolate on top of the pretzel rod.
- Stick the sprinkle covered cookie here and press to secure properly.
Notes
- In the video, I used pretzel sticks for the stems but you can roll out little pieces of Tootsie rolls too.
- Use chopped peanuts in place of chocolate sprinkles to add even more rustic texture.
- Try other store-bought cookies such as Oreos or Milanos. You may have to trim slightly on the top with a sharp knife for the perfect shape.
- You can apply the same technique on cut out sugar cookies too.
- Read additional tips and variations above.
- Leftovers can be stored in a cookie jar at room temperature for up to 3 days.
