Easy emoji cake recipe (poop cake), homemade with simple ingredients without fondant. Chocolate cake is covered in chocolate frosting and chocolate shavings.
These Emoji Cookies (Emoji Oreos) were so much fun to make that I just had to make a cake with the same theme. This is not the typical smiley cake design or even the wink face that are so common and quite frankly, a bit boring. The poop cake was definitely funnier and just as easy to make too.

Variations for poop cake
Use chocolate sprinkles- This can be used instead of chocolate shavings.
Omit the chocolate shavings- Just use a spatula to smoothly ice the cake and add the fondant eye and mouth details.
Try different cake flavor- Such as Chocolate Pound Cake or Banana Chocolate Chip Cake.
Consider a different frosting- Such as Chocolate Cream Cheese Frosting or Chocolate Ganache Frosting.
Fill cake- I didn't do this but you can cut the cake in half and spread jams/ preserves, fresh berries, caramel sauce or even ganache.
Make mini cakes- Use a smaller template to cut out smaller individual cakes and decorate according to instructions below.
Decorate completely with fondant- I only used fondant for the eyes and mouth but you can cover the entire cake in fondant for a smoother finish.
Make a rainbow cake- By using American Buttercream Frosting and tinting it with gel colors. It's a fun and colorful twist on the same shape/design.
Tips and techniques for emoji birthday cake
Don't decorate a warm cake- Because the heat will cause the icing and chocolate shavings to melt and make a mess.
How to make chocolate shavings? Run a potato peeler along the sides of a chocolate bar. Use chilled chocolate so that it doesn't melt so quickly.
Use thick scrapbook paper when printing template- Because it’s firmer and holds its shape better when you use it as a guide to cut out the cake shape.
Use a very sharp knife to cut cake- Because a blunt knife does not cut smoothly and creates a lot of crumbs.
Chill cake before cutting with template- This is very important because the cake is firmer and it's easier to cut it in the right shape and not end up with messy crumbs everywhere.
Homemade frosting vs. Store-bought frosting- Either can be used. Store bought is obviously more convenient when you are short on time.
Storage
Room temperature- Once the cake is ready, store it at room temperature away from humidity, moisture, sunlight for up to 24 hours as long as there are no perishable fillings. These would also be my “make ahead” instructions.
Refrigerate– Decorated cake can be stored in a cake box for up to 2 days.
Freeze– Unfrosted cakes and frostings can be stored in sealed containers for up to 1 month. When you are ready to make this dessert, thaw everything in fridge overnight and then, decorate as per instructions below.
