Pie Toppings
Ice cream– A few scoops of vanilla or chocolate ice cream would be delicious.
Jams and preserves– Warm it slightly and drizzle on top. Try blueberry, blackberry, raspberry, or this amazing Homemade Strawberry Jam. The subtly tartness from fruits compliments the rich chocolate flavor beautifully.
Frostings– Try any of these: Caramel Frosting, German Chocolate Cake Frosting (Coconut Pecan Frosting) or Peanut Butter Frosting. Use these in place or under the Cool Whip topping.
Coconut- Shredded sweetened coconut is best. Toasted is even better!
Add fruit– Add fresh strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, or blueberries.
Add ganache- Use this homemade Easy Chocolate Ganache {2 Ingredients}.
Add nuts- Add chopped and toasted pecans, peanuts, or walnuts for a touch of texture and crunch.
Add candy- Such as M&Ms, chopped up Snickers, or Kit Kats.
Add crushed cookies- Crush up Oreos, butter cookies, or any of your favorite cookies would be great.
Variations For Homemade Chocolate Pie
Add nut butters- Such as Nutella, peanut butter, cashew, or almond butter in the filling.
Try another pie crust- Like this Graham Cracker Crust {No Bake} or this Flaky Butter Pie Crust ,which will need to be baked first before filling.
Add cocoa powder or espresso powder to filling- This enhances the the chocolate flavor so nicely.
Add a layer of freshly sliced bananas within the filling- For a chocolate spin on the classic banana cream pie.
Omit the whipped cream in the pudding mixture- Just spread it all on top of the pie for a richer chocolate flavor.
Add extracts- Such as almond, bourbon, cherry, amaretto, vanilla, or mint for an additional distinct yet subtle flavor.
Use white chocolate pudding mix- In place of regular chocolate pudding mix.
Add mascarpone cheese- Add it in after the pudding sets, for an extra bit of creamy decadence.
Decoration ideas: Pipe whipped cream beautifully using piping tips, or add sprinkles, or shredded coconut.
Tips And Techniques For No Bake Chocolate Pudding Pie
How to thicken pie filling? Make sure to chill the pie filling long enough for it to thicken. Sometimes, it even needs to thicken overnight. Also, make sure to use full fat ingredients because they are high in fat content and thicker.
How to make pie filling thinner? Simply add more milk, or mix in more Cool Whip.
Homemade Oreo pie crust vs. Store-bought pie crust- Either can be used for this recipe. Use whatever your time allows!
Chilling is important- Because this firms up the filling otherwise it will be too runny to cut.
Do not use fat-free ingredients- Because the filling will not thicken to the correct consistency and the pie is just not as creamy.
Milk must be cold- In order to properly activate the pudding mix to firm up!
Homemade chocolate pudding vs. Store-bought pudding- This Vegan Chocolate Pudding is a delicious homemade choice, or you can use store-bought. Either will work and taste just fine.
Cool Whip substitute- Homemade Whipped Cream is a good alternative but I do believe that Cool Whip helps hold the pie filling together much better and firmly.
Why do you fold in Cool Whip gently? Because we can avoid losing the air that adds lift and lightness to the final product by doing so. To fold effectively, always make sure to add your lighter ingredients (Cool Whip) to your heavier mixture (Pudding mix/milk) starting from the center of the bowl. Then, scrape along the bottom of the bowl towards you, rotate, repeat, and avoid aggressive stirring to keep that airiness intact.
Storage
Refrigerate– Leftovers can be sealed in a container in the fridge for up to 3 days.
Freeze– Store in a sealed container without whipped cream topping for up to 1 month. When you are ready to enjoy it, let it thaw in fridge and then serve with toppings of your choice.
