Quick and easy Irish trifle recipe with layers of cake, pudding and fruits. Fun, quick and easy to make with kids for St.Patrick's day parties.

I saw this cool beer mug while shopping and I just knew I would be making an Irish trifle for St.Patrick's Day.

There is no better way to "Irish up a trifle" than to use the colors of the Irish flag... Orange, white and green!

This Irish trifle dessert is kid-friendly because it DOES NOT have any alcohol.

However, adults can make BOOZY Irish trifle or sherry trifle or Irish whiskey trifle or baileys Irish cream trifle to really take it up a notch.  You can add the booze in your cake cake recipe or make a syrup out of it or even use it in frosting. You can even soak the fruits in some alcohol to really "booze it up."

Instead of an alcohol-based cake, you can also use ladyfingers soaked in sherry or wine. One of my Dad's British friend says that is the BEST Irish trifle recipe.

    How to make Irish trifle?

Prepare the cake in 2 colors (green and white). Prepare vanilla pudding  in 2 colors (green and orange). Cut up some kiwis, grapes and oranges. Prepare white buttercream icing. Then, just start layering everything in a trifle bowl or a big beer mug and top it off with swirls of frosting to create the illusion of  "beer froth."

    Who invented the trifle?

Based on my research, it was invented in 1500's by Thomas Dawson.

How do you make English trifle? How do you make traditional trifle? How do you make a trifle dessert?

It's made with layers of cake, fruits, jelly and custard arranged in a large trifle bowl and topped off with whipped cream.

    Irish Trifle 1

There are so many LAYERS in this Irish trifle (starting from the bottom):

    1. Green pound cake pieces
    2. Orange colored vanilla pudding
    3. Grapes and kiwis
    4. White pound cake pieces
    5. Green colored vanilla pudding
    6. Orange slices
    7. Buttercream icing "froth"

    Now, doesn't that look drool-worthy?

    Ingredients

    • 1 Sour cream pound cake 3 colors: orange, white, green
    • 3 cups Vanilla pudding 3 colors: orange, white, green
    • 1 cup Buttercream frosting
    • ½ cup Kiwis Sliced, Patted dry
    • ½ cup Green grapes Sliced, Patted dry
    • 1 Orange Sliced into small pieces, Patted dry

    Instructions

    • Prepare your cake batter. Then, divide the batter into 3 bowls. Leave one bowl as is and color the other two batters green and orange.
    • Once the cakes are baked, allow them to cool and slice them up into small pieces.
    • Sticking to my orange, white and green Irish flag theme, I chose fruits that were green and orange (I couldn’t find any white fruits). Slice your oranges, kiwis and grapes fairly small.
    • Prepare your puddings in orange, white and green colors.
    • Then, start layering everything in your big beer mug.
    • Finally, use a round decorating tip to pipe buttercream icing on top of the mug, to create the illusion of "froth." Enjoy!

    Notes

    • Store leftovers in a sealed container in the fridge for up to 24 hours.
