The best, homemade, quick and easy cherry turnovers recipe with puff pastry. They are light, flaky and filled with cherry pie filling and topped off with sanding sugar.
These are great to serve at breakfast or brunch, just like my Easy Strawberry Strudels. You can even enjoy them as a snack. I love to pack them for picnics and road trips too. Making them at home is also much cheaper than buying them from bakeries.

How to make cherry turnovers with puff pastry (puff pastry cherry turnovers)?
- Cut puff pastry squares.
- Spoon each with cherry filling.
- Seal the edges.
- Brush egg wash on top.
- Sprinkle sanding sugar.
- Bake and enjoy
Variations
- Drizzle glaze- Omit the sanding sugar. When the pastries cool down, drizzle them with vanilla glaze or lemon glaze.
- Try other pie filling flavors- Such as Raspberry Pie Filling or Peach Pie Filling or Strawberry Pie Filling or Blueberry Pie Filling and even Lemon Curd.
- Make mini turnovers- These are great for kids birthday parties. Just use smaller squares of pastry dough.
- Make cream cheese turnovers- Fill each square with 1 tablespoon cream cheese and 1 tablespoon filling to make them super creamy.
Tips and Techniques
- Don't overfill pastries- Because that would cause the filling to leak out during baking.
- Seal edges and corners tightly- Because this also prevents the filling from leaking out during baking.
- Sanding sugar is optional- You can omit it entirely but I recommend it since it adds a nice crunch. Sanding sugar is different than granulated sugar, which you should not use since it would just melt and make a mess during baking.
- Store-bought or homemade pie filling filling- Either can be used. If you are short on time, canned works just as well.
- Don't use sugar-free filling- Because it has an odd after-taste.
- Store-bought or homemade puff pastry- Either can be used. I buy it from stores because it's so quick and convenient. No need to make it from scratch because it's a tediously long process.
- Can you use crescent rolls, pie crust, or phyllo dough? Instead of puff pastry, some people have used those but I did not think any of those worked well to yield the perfect cherry turnover recipe. The texture was different and the filling would leak or they would just not have the proper shape.

Ingredients
- 1 box Puff pastry sheets Thawed, I used the 17.3 oz Pepperidge Farm box
- 1 cup Cherry pie filling
- 1 Egg Large, Optional
- 1 tablespoon Water Optional
- ⅓ cup Sanding sugar Optional
Instructions
- Unwrap both the puff pastry sheets and cut into 8 squares (4 from each sheet).
- Place 1-2 tablespoons cherry pie filling in the center of each square.
- Brush the edges of the square with water.
- Fold the puff pastry from one corner to the other in a triangle shape, enclosing the filling inside.
- Use a fork to press and seal the edges together OR you can just pinch all along the edges tightly, which is what I did.
- Place them on a cookie tray, lined with parchment paper.
- Optional: In a small mixing bowl, whisk together egg and water. Brush this on ton top of each pastry. Sprinkle sanding sugar on top.
- Bake at 375 degrees F for about 20-25 minutes or until pastry is golden brown.

Can these be frozen?
Abeer Rizvi
I don't recommend freezing baked puff pastry items. They become soggy upon thawing.
