    Today's handy baking hack/ baking tip on how to make brown sugar is going to be a time saver when you are out of brown sugar and need it urgently for a recipe.

    There have been so many instances when I am in the middle of making cookies and realized that I was out of brown sugar (uh-oh!).

    Obviously, I CAN'T run out to the store but this quick homemade version always saves the day!

    In case you don't know, brown sugar is very important in baking because it’s the main ingredient that’s responsible for adding CHEWINESS to cookies and it also adds a deep CARAMEL flavor.

    I also think it tastes better and FRESHER than the store-bought brown version.

    What can I use as a substitute for brown sugar?

    There is no good substitute for brown sugar. The texture and flavor of recipes will change if you use any other sweetener.

    Homemade brown sugar involves the combination of only 2 ingredients:

    • Granulated sugar
    • Molasses

    You can mix them together with a spatula or use a KitchenAid mixer with the paddle attachment or even use a hand-held mixer on the low setting.

    Can you use raw sugar instead of brown sugar in baking?

    In some recipes, you can use it but you might have to alter the recipe a little to get the desired results. I still suggest using brown sugar, when required in a recipe.

    Mix together 1 tablespoon maple syrup with 1 cup granulated sugar until thoroughly combined.

    No! Brown sugar  gives recipes a certain texture/ flavors and molasses gives recipes another texture/flavor. You can't replace one with the other.

    How to make dark brown sugar from light brown sugar?

    Add 1 tablespoon molasses to 1 cup light brown sugar and mix it together, which would result in dark brown sugar.

    How long does homemade brown sugar last? How to store homemade brown sugar?

    It's supposed to indefinitely but BEST within 2 years, as long as it's stored properly in a sealed container.

    After a while, brown sugar has a tendency to get hard.  You can easily learn how to soften brown sugar when that happens.

    Ingredients
      

    • 1 cup Granulated sugar
    • 1 tablespoon Molasses

    Instructions
     

    • In a mixing bowl, add sugar and molasses. 
    • Use a mixer to mix everything until the sugar and molasses are thoroughly combined.
    • Store this brown sugar in an airtight container and enjoy in your baking.
