Stop chocolate chips from sinking to the bottom of the cake with this trick and one simple ingredient - flour! This tip applies to nuts, apples and pears too.
When I was about 12 or 13, I made my Mom a chocolate chip cake for her birthday all by myself. I was really excited until my Mom cut a slice of the cake and I noticed all the chocolate chips had sunk to the bottom of the cake. My mom didn't even care. She was just so happy and proud of me!
I told her that I must have messed up the recipe because that was not supposed to happen. She gave me a big hug and and said that we can make the cake together again and she will show me a neat little tip to stop chocolate chips from sinking to the bottom of a cake ever again. I am happy to share that will all of you today.

A few weeks later, when we made the same cake again, she took a bowl and added a little flour and tossed the chocolate chips in them. They became lightly coated with flour and she simply folded them into the cake batter. I wasn't sure if something so easy could actually work but, it worked like a charm! When we cut that chocolate chip cake, the chocolate chips were scattered around the cake and did not sink at all!
This tip is also applicable to other add-ins like apples and pears or even various nuts. However, if you are going to be adding in nuts into your cake batter, be sure to chop them up into smaller pieces and then coat them in flour. If you don't chop them up, then they will sink- simply due to their heavy weight!
I usually place the nuts in a Ziploc bag and crush them with a hammer. Other add-ins like raisins and chocolate chips don't need to be chopped up.

Gorgeous pics, as always! Sometimes I like the layer of sunken chocolate chips but I'll try your trick next time.

Thanks Melissa! Sometimes, I like that too... especially in cupcakes when there is an ooey gooey chocolaate layer at the bottom but not too fond of it in cakes...hehe. Let me know how this tip works out for you

Thank you so much for your help, I've been struggling with this for years and I just couldn't figure it out. Thank you so much! Thank your mom for me as well. Lol

I am glad to hear I helped. It's crazy how something as simple as flour can make all the difference in the world!

I wonder if blueberries would do the same. I have the most trouble with them.

I have applied this trick on blueberries and it works perfectly. Just wash the blueberries and dry them with a paper towel. Then, toss them in flour until they are fully coated and fold them into your batter with a spatula or wooden spoon. You can see my blueberry lime cupcake recipe here and I used this trick there: https://cakewhiz.com/blueberry-lime-cupcakes/

This is an amazing tip! I'm so glad I stumbled upon this pin.

Works like a charm. Just make sure not to aggressively mix when you stir in those coated chocolate chips

How do I put Skittles or m&m candy in my box cake mix
Abeer Rizvi
I have never tried Skittles but if you are using m&m, make sure it's the mini ones and you follow the same process as above.

If I am using a box mix for brownies,
Would this 'no sinking chips' work if I use brownie mix instead of flour?
Abeer Rizvi
Brownie mix is heavier than cake mix and the result is thicker batter. I am not really sure what would happen to the chocolate chips in there but this "tip" would work fine with a cake mix.

i am excited to try this. I hope chocolate chips go with a butter yellow cake.
