Stop chocolate chips from sinking to the bottom of the cake with this trick and one simple ingredient - flour! This tip applies to nuts, apples and pears too.
When I was about 12 or 13, I made my Mom a chocolate chip cake for her birthday all by myself. I was really excited until my Mom cut a slice of the cake and I noticed all the chocolate chips had sunk to the bottom of the cake. My mom didn't even care. She was just so happy and proud of me!
I told her that I must have messed up the recipe because that was not supposed to happen. She gave me a big hug and and said that we can make the cake together again and she will show me a neat little tip to stop chocolate chips from sinking to the bottom of a cake ever again. I am happy to share that will all of you today.

A few weeks later, when we made the same cake again, she took a bowl and added a little flour and tossed the chocolate chips in them. They became lightly coated with flour and she simply folded them into the cake batter. I wasn't sure if something so easy could actually work but, it worked like a charm! When we cut that chocolate chip cake, the chocolate chips were scattered around the cake and did not sink at all!
This tip is also applicable to other add-ins like apples and pears or even various nuts. However, if you are going to be adding in nuts into your cake batter, be sure to chop them up into smaller pieces and then coat them in flour. If you don't chop them up, then they will sink- simply due to their heavy weight!
I usually place the nuts in a Ziploc bag and crush them with a hammer. Other add-ins like raisins and chocolate chips don't need to be chopped up.
