In a large mixing bowl, mix butter, sour cream and vanilla extract until smooth. Add powdered sugar (½ cup at a time), while continuing to mix.
Continue mixing until icing is thickened and has a piping consistency.
Frost your cakes, cupcakes or rolls and enjoy.
- If icing is too thick, mix in some milk or water until you reach desired consistency.
- If icing is too thin, mix in more powdered sugar until desired consistency is reached.
- Use full fat ingredients.
- Make sure your butter is unsalted.
- To prevent lumpy frosting, be sure to sift powdered sugar first.
- You can color icing with liquid food coloring or gel colors. I prefer gel since it's thicker and doesn't affect the overall consistency of the icing.
- For additional tanginess, you can also add a little bit of fresh lemon juice.
- Read additional tips and variations above.
- Leftovers can be stored in a sealed container in the refrigerator for up to 1 week.
