Ingredients

Instructions

  • In a large mixing bowl, mix butter, sour cream and vanilla extract until smooth.
  • Add powdered sugar (½ cup at a time), while continuing to mix.
  • Continue mixing until icing is thickened and has a piping consistency.
  • Frost your cakes, cupcakes or rolls and enjoy.

Notes

  • If icing is too thick, mix in some milk or water until you reach desired consistency.
  • If icing is too thin, mix in more powdered sugar until desired consistency is reached.
  • Use full fat ingredients.
  • Make sure your butter is unsalted.
  • To prevent lumpy frosting, be sure to sift powdered sugar first.
  • You can color icing with liquid food coloring or gel colors. I prefer gel since it's thicker and doesn't affect the overall consistency of the icing.
  • For additional tanginess, you can also add a little bit of fresh lemon juice.
  • Read additional tips and variations above.
  • Leftovers can be stored in a sealed container in the refrigerator for up to 1 week.
