Easy Chocolate Sour Cream Frosting

Quick and easy chocolate sour cream frosting recipe, homemade with simple ingredients and lots of cocoa powder. Sweet and tangy and great for piping and cake decorating.

  • In a large mixing bowl, mix butter, sour cream and vanilla extract until smooth.
  • Add cocoa powder and mix until combined.
  • Add powdered sugar (½ cup at a time), while continuing to mix.
  • Continue mixing until icing is thickened and has a piping consistency.
  • Frost your cakes, cupcakes or other desserts and enjoy.

Notes

  • If icing is too thick, mix in some milk or water until you reach desired consistency.
  • If icing is too thin, mix in more powdered sugar until desired consistency is reached.
  • Use unsweetened cocoa powder.
  • Sift powdered sugar and cocoa powder to remove any lumps. 
  • Use full fat ingredients.
  • Make sure you are using unsalted butter.
  • All ingredients should be at room temperature.
