Bake vanilla cupcakes and allow them to cool down completely.
To make swirls, attach the star tip (Tip# 1M) to a piping bag and fill it with red frosting on one side and blue frosting on the other side. To make buttercream swirls, hold piping bag at a 90 degree angle at the center of the cupcake. Then, slowly, squeeze and and move the icing bag around in a circle, while moving up until you have a tall swirl of red and blue frosting. Toss white sprinkles on the frosting and add a star candy on top, if you like.
If you want to make buttercream flowers, fill separate piping bags with red, white and blue frostings and attach a round tip. Hold piping bag on the outer edge of the cupcake and pipe inwards. Do this all around the cupcake until you have a cupcake full of petals. Pipe a big circle in the center.
Enjoy!
